This is such an odd one, I thought here in building and Repairing would find the people with the knowledge.
Just browsing around that auction site, I came across a company in Germany called HK instruments. Checked their site and found a horribly pointy axe that sports an Ebony capped body over basswood. Now I love the feel of Ebony (but wouldn't be seen dead with anything that pointy) so I was wondering how the tone would be influenced, with a long view of maybe an Ebony-capped SG.

Any thoughts?

Ebony on fretboards is supposed to be a bit more snappy and toppy than rosewood, but probably not quite as much as maple. I love ebony fretboards, but don't have one at the moment \:\(

I would imagine an ebony cap on a body would therefore have a similar effect as a maple one. Certainly sounds interesting- could make an SG sound a *bit* more like a les paul but still looking pretty subtle.

On another forum a Luthier was talking about caps/vaneers and from what I can gather it all depends on the thickness. "1/8"-1/4" thickness is deemed to be cosmetic and is unlikely to really change th tone of a guitar. He mentions that "1/2"-3/4"" is then 20 - 40% of its mass and at that point "tables start to turn".
