#279374 - 26/08/10 01:25 AM Cost-effective cabling?

I'm getting hacked off with my pedalboard. I've got an assortment of patch cables, some self-made (mostly by putting right-angled plugs on shop-bought patch cables that came with straight ones), and some of those cheapo coloured ones, and I keep getting problems with cables failing intermittently. I think it's time to tear the lot out and replace them with some quality ones.

So the question is this: what's the best way to do this without spending an absolute fortune? I've heard lots about George L's cable, but I know it's fairly pricey and I've heard mixed opinions on the reliability of the the solderless connections. Anyone have any experience of the Planet Waves cabling kit?

I'm quite happy to make up my own cables from scratch too, in which case I need recommendations on good quality low-ish cost jackplugs and cable.

And of course, the dead simple option is to buy them off the shelf, although I suspect this is going to be the most expensive way to do it unless I buy another job lot of those nasty coloured leads with the moulded plugs. Ewww.

Oh yeah- currently eight pedals on my board, may be subject to change, so a few extra cables would be useful.

The most reliable way would be to buy a bunch of decent cable and decent jacks (neutrik or switchcraft probably, or those low profile no-name things) then solder everything yourself.

I wouldn't use it for main cables that undergo more stress but George L's stuff is good for boards and it's what I use. The connections are fine once they're made, but it's not an exact science- sometimes it takes more than one go to get the spike of the jack perfectly into the core of the cable.

It's also really quick to fix when you get a problem- just whip the ends off and chuck in a new bit of flex \:\)

Buy cheap = Buy twice. Some right angled jacks are difficult to solder and you may need to scuff the shine off the place were you are soldering the lead tips onto to avoid dry joints...

I maybe teaching you to suck eggs, I've no idea. However if you get really good purpose built ones you may thank yourself in the long run.
