Hey,
Just joined the forum today. I'm looking forward to getting involved in usual forum activity etc.
My guitar playing and owning history goes something like this...
Classical guitar and lessons at school aged about 12. Got bored quickly because I wasn't enjoying what I was playing so gave up.
Listened to Nirvana a couple of years later and decided to try and play it on my classical guitar. It worked, so I bought a Yamaha Pacifica 112 in Cherry Sunburst and started to teach myself.
Played in a couple of rock bands at school doing covers of allsorts of stuff. At this point I was all power chords and noise.
I bought an applause (cheap ovation) electro acoustic while at uni and played around on that a bit but nothing to serious. Learnt to play under the bridge and similar stuff that involved more than just thrashing out chords.
Spent a year living in Vancouver, Canada where I met some like minded people and we spent several months running an open mic night at the uni there, which was great. The whole time my guitar skills were improving slowly.
Back in the UK, I sold both the pacifica and the applause and bought a Tanglewood Jumbo electro acoustic, which I still have and love.
About 5 years ago, I started listening to and playing a lot more acoustic based stuff like Jack Johnson and Dave Matthews Band. Playing stuff by the latter has I think really helped to boost my playing ability, in terms strange chords, time signatures, and picking and fingering, muting techniques etc. etc. Spent a lot of time doing acoustic duet stuff with a friend which was really fun.
Somewhere in the whole process I started playing a lot more leat stuff, mostly on acoustic. Mostly based around the Pentatonic scales and I'm now pretty comfortable soloing over most rock and blues related stuff.
I recently regularly started jamming with some friends in a studio and we've, again been doing covers of allsorts, from various types of modern rock, to folk to more 60s/70s punk and rock. I'm loving it, as its the first time for ages that I've played plugged in with a full band.
I've been playing mostly electric guitar with the "band", so just the other day I went out and bought another Yamaha Pacifica, a 112V, cos its cheap and I loved my first one. I'm enjoying it at the moment. I Prefer them to Strats.
Its interesting, but I really feel that my time as an acoustic only player has helped me as an electric player.
I feel like I've come quite a long way in my guitar adventure and I'm fairly happy with the level I've reached, but I feel as though there's so much more potential there and I'm really trying to unlock it.
I feel as though, technically, I'm capable of a lot more, because I tend to be able to learn most things if I can find an accurate tab or someone teaches it to me, but I think my music theory or lack thereof is holding me back. I wish I knew more about key signatures and which scales to use to solo over them. I don't know the modes etc.
It is my mission from now on to obtain this missing knowledge and become a better player, so maybe joining this forum will help, maybe not. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the next phase of my guitar playing......
Woah, my first post turned into a bit of an essay. So if you got this far then great, well done!
Anyway, looking forward to meeting (forum style) you all.

Welcome to the forum! Regarding the music theory, there are people here (including myself) who'll be able to help. Just ask.
