Hi, New to the Forum and looking for som info. I have a white CMI electric guitar (made in Japan) Cannot find a model number or serial number anywhere. Believe made in the 70's. Three pick ups, three tone knobs, and i believe 21 frets. Anyone help me out with some info on this?

Without looking at your images I think I know the guitar you have. CMI were certainly produced in the 70s and were definately one of the better brands of the day i.e. CSL, Antoria, Ibanez, Kimbara, Cimar, Arbiter, etc, etc. As it is an old guitar check for heavy use such as fretware, crackly pots or worn machine gears. If it is original and in good order these guitars are now considered semi-collectable.

Hi jack.plug. You obviously know your guitars. I've not been able to find any info or pictures of my guitar. Any more info you can share would be greatly appreciated. Please look at my pics if you get a chance.

Hi, had a look at your pictures. That is a tasty old strat you got there, looks nice. Yep, that is the guitar I thought you must have. Not too sure about the p/ups, I can't help thinking the originals would have been a matching white with the rest of the guitar(could be wrong though). That neck looks lovely, beautifully aged and a nice amber colour. The guitar is based upon the strat of the day; 70s, note the bullet truss rod at the large h/stock and a three ply s/plate. CMI stood for (something...)musical instruments, I can't remember what the first damn word was, sorry. If you have the cash it might be worthwhile getting a pro set-up 'cus thats a nice guitar. A good guitar workshop will set up the action, intonation, truss rod adjustment and re-string with strings of your choice and even possibly spray the electrics to eradicate any dusty crackling. I would stick my neck out and suggest the CMI is on par with the squier classic vibe range. Next time you're in a guitar shop see what you think.

Hi Jack.plug, Many thanks for your reply. Firstly, I believe the CMI stands for'Cleartone Musical Instruments' a branch of Jim Marshall's Company.Having read many threads from various guitar forums I understand, as you said, that this guitar was made in one of two factories in Japan and imported over here. As far as I can make out they were only produced for a few years in the early 70's. This one does appear to have white pick ups, although the have probably discoloured over the years and are now cream! Do you or anyone know the model name/number and would there be a serial number anywhere? (I can't find one) I don't actually play guitar (wish I could) and probably a little too old now to start! My eldest son (16) plays in a band with his bro (14) on drums and his friend (also 14) on lead. Obviously due to their ages it is difficult for them to gig many places although they have done a recording session and produced a couple of songs ( one cover and one original - (You Tube - The Subject 51) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIwKt2OxvM0 This guitar was bought from a friend who picked it up at a car boot sale!. I thought it might be a nice item to have /keep. My eldest now plays bass and therefore this guitar doesn't get much use. My lads have a few other guitars that they tend to use more fequently. I may look to sell or maybe keep, depending on it's value. (Youngest wants a new set of Zildjian cymbals and this may have to go towards the cost of them!!!!) What sort of cost would it be to have it set up? and lastly any idea what the guitar might be worth??

I wish I could find one of those at a carboot sale. If you part with it, its very difficult to say what its worth. Many people won't recognise the brand but then again someone who does may be willing to give perhaps 125 quid as long as its fully playable and needs no work. The fact that its Japanese is good but a somewhat obscure name is not helpful i.e. Japanes Squier strat and everybody knows what it is. The not so good points of the guitar is the neck is not one peice of wood (headstock) and the machines are not great quality. As I suggested earlier these guitars are now smi-collectable and there may be somebody out there who would love it. If it requires no work, I would say anything over 100 quid and you've done O.K. if it need attention its a question of get what you can.
