Everybody on this forum will have their own choice!! For me it would have to be my Marshall DSL 401. These are rated at 40 watts and do everything from a nice clean to a superb crunch to a massive overdrive. Price is about £600 but there are always a few on Ebay at very good money. And remember........you can't beat the Marshall valves at this price.

Stickyfiddle and I tend to make the same recommendation in threads like this (there are several already, so cross-reference answers here with those to see there's any more interesting suggestions), and that's the Laney LC15.
Again, it's at the low wattage end of what could be termed "giggable"- it won't be any use if you're playing in a funk band or something that requires a very loud, very clean tone, and it'll benefit from some help from a PA system, but it'll fit in the boot of your car with space to spare. It might not have the requisite "chunk" if you're playing heavier rock styles, but it should work a treat for bluesy or indie styles, and a decent overdrive/distortion/fuzz in front will widen your sonic palette...

Cheers for the feedback guys I was having a look at this amp:

Description is tatty but full working order and well giged at some point.
Is this one of the newer Peavey Classic 50's or an old one??
What do you think it's worth and anything I should look out for if I go and give it a test rip?

A friend of mine has a Classic 50 and loves it (moved from a DSL401) - I think your picture is an old one by the way. I've recently moved from a TSL122 to a Classic 30 and love it (lot of love going on for the Peaveys!!) - easily loud enough for gigging but not as versatile as the Marshall, I tend to manage overdrive, etc. using seperate pedals now rather than the foot switch which works well.
Not sure you'd quite get one for £300 but you could have a dig around Ebay.
Cheers, Richard.

If the price is within your stated budget, it's probably well worth a go. The Classic 30 is well known as a good solid workhorse valve amp for sensible money, and the Classic 50, although it's a little less common, is similarly well regarded. Like eski says, it's not necessarily the most versatile amp, but an overdrive pedal in front will give you access to a wider range of sounds.
A 50w 2x12" valve amp should be plenty loud enough for all but the bands most disdainful of their long-term hearing prospects, but it'll be big and heavy, which won't help in the portability stakes.
