Jeff, if you are using a longer scale guitar, (Strat, superstrat, tele etc) it will be harder to bend notes than on the shorter scale of Gibson type guitars. The strings are tighter.
When I had a Strat, I used 8's on it to be able to get consistent bends.
As for using the whammy instead of bending? No way. Try doing the bend on the G string while holding the note on the B string 2 frets below. The bend brings them into unison which is a technique used a lot in rock and blues. You can't do that with a whammy.
Other tips. Bends are easiest around the 12th fret. Lower than the 5th fret they become hard work. This is to do with the geometry of the strings and the angle the bent string has to make.
Last one. Use two fingers to push the string into the bend. No, you can't always do that but its a good tip for starting out with soft fingers.

By no means required though. I can bend strings perfectly consistently on my Strat and my Tele with 10s, and Stevie Ray Vaughan managed it with 13s for a good many years. With lighter strings I find that I "overshoot" the pitch I'm aiming for and bend sharp. 10s give me what feels like the right amount of resistance when I bend strings (so of course, your preference might be different). I've read numerous interviews with pro players who say they go up a string gauge when they're on tour and playing shows every night compared to what they'd use in the studio or at times when they're playing less frequently- partly down to the increased strength that comes from the extra exercise their fingers are getting on tour, partly down to the adrenaline of live gigs, I imagine.

Agree with the rest of what Lurcher says though...
