Tried to switch on my WinXP music PC earlier. The fans work but the HD won't boot up; it doesn't even spin although the HD activity LED on the front panel comes on. I looked on the web for some info; found lots but there was nothing useful. Cleaned up the fans and heatsink gently to remove dust; changed the cable/ribbon that connects the motherboard to the HD and even tried a different HD. Nothing worked. Any idea what's wrong?

Sorry to hear that, Gilles.

Is the disk being detected properly by the BIOS? Have the BIOS settings somehow changed?

I've had weird problems myself which turned out to be due to the backup battery on the motherboard going flat after a few years, allowing the CMOS memory to get corrupted and losing the settings. They used to be Ni-Cd rechargeable cells but nowadays are usually non-rechargeable lithium cells, e.g. CR2032, which have a life of maybe three years. If the battery voltage is much under 3V you need to change it and reset the CMOS using the jumper provided.

Found a refurbished PC tower for £60 with slightly better specs. I think it was a sign the PC had to be changed. I won't even bother transplanting the HD; I haven't lost anything important. I'll put up with the hassle of re-installing the software.

Gilles,
Does it post (single beep) and do you get any display or is it just a blank screen. If no display the most likely cause is unseated graphics or other card and you can rule out by trying each in turn. To rule out hard drives and optical drives remove the ribbon cables and it should post to the boot screen and then prompt with boot device failure or similar. You can often detect the hard drive failure by the presence of a clicking, high pitched whine or other noise which wasn't there previously. Happy to help further if you don't get any joy.

Regards

Gary

No, it doesn't beep and I can't get the boot screen whatever I try. I can't even switch it off; I have to pull the kettle lead out every time!

The ICT guys at my wife's school can get me a second-hand machine with slightly better specs (faster processor and more RAM) for £30 so I'll accept the offer. I don't need anything fancy. Thanks for all the tips, guys.

Gilles,
For what it's worth it probably isnt the hard drive and if you aren't getting any display it may well be a simple matter of reseating the graphics card.

I've tried reseating everything inside the computer, the RAM, the PCI cards (SCSI + audio/MIDI), all connectors. The graphics card is built into the motherboard anyway. I think the motherboard has packed up.

OK, I've got my new PC and I don't think it's going to cost me a penny. It has 2.5Gb RAM so I can't complain. I have reinstalled all the applications successfully and it seems to run smoothly. I am going to get an external USB HD to save my files to. Phew!

That's good news Gilles.

I have a 1TB USB hard drive from Maplin for backups and I use Microsoft's freebie SyncToy as the backup software. Recommended.

Does it backup system files, etc. so you can restore the disc image to another HD if necessary? Or do you just save your audio/sequence etc. files to it?
