Gilles, At the risk of stealing Daves Thunder, Sync Toy wil back up what you tell it to but it doesn't have the functionality which allows you to restore a disk image. Depending on what version of windows you are running, windows backup allows you to create a system image on an external storage device and create an emergency boot disk which allows access for restoration when all is not well. I also found this http://www.todo-backup.com/landing/free-backup-software.htm?gclid=CKeJ-dG-6aYCFYMTfAodKDPO5w which is free for home use; havent tried it myself but may be worth a go. Failing that there are a number of cheapish solutions such as Norton Ghost or Acronis.
Regards
Gary

Dave, You're right about the corruption, but what I do on all my installations is install the operating system and any defaults applications such as office, anti-virus software etc then make an image. All you need to backup thereafter is as you said your important files. Personal preference but as you say it is good to have a reformat every now and then.

It is likely the Power Supply that has gone if it doesnt do anything at all
Easy replacement but will cost you £££ to fix it, maybe 40 / 50 quid for a decent one
