I've only used it on Windows 7 64-bit. It's supposed to be able to backup system files but in practice there are some system files it can't or won't copy. My guess is that the operating system prevents access to its critical files.

I used to make disk images back in the days of Windows 98 and ME, but I haven't found any reliable way of doing it for later versions. And then there's the problem of validating the new installation; things have been tightened up a lot in this area, both for the OS and for some applications.

The first time you run SyncToy it takes ages, as it copies everything (almost), but on subsequent runs it looks for differences and is much quicker.

Gilles,
At the risk of stealing Daves Thunder, Sync Toy wil back up what you tell it to but it doesn't have the functionality which allows you to restore a disk image. Depending on what version of windows you are running, windows backup allows you to create a system image on an external storage device and create an emergency boot disk which allows access for restoration when all is not well. I also found this http://www.todo-backup.com/landing/free-backup-software.htm?gclid=CKeJ-dG-6aYCFYMTfAodKDPO5w which is free for home use; havent tried it myself but may be worth a go. Failing that there are a number of cheapish solutions such as Norton Ghost or Acronis.

Regards

Gary

Gary,

My feeling is that if everything crashes, I don't really want to restore from a disk image that could itself be corrupted, i.e. a recent backup. (For example, the disk image could contain lurking malware, or corrupt system files.) So I do a clean install on the new drive of the operating system plus applications. It can take a while, but it only happens occasionally and then I know it's clean.

What's important to me is that I don't lose my user files, which in the case of a music PC could be many gigabytes of irreplaceable audio tracks. SyncToy seems okay for this purpose.

Dave,
You're right about the corruption, but what I do on all my installations is install the operating system and any defaults applications such as office, anti-virus software etc then make an image. All you need to backup thereafter is as you said your important files. Personal preference but as you say it is good to have a reformat every now and then.

It is likely the Power Supply that has gone if it doesnt do anything at all

Easy replacement but will cost you £££ to fix it, maybe 40 / 50 quid for a decent one
