Don't worry, my fingers are short -- I can only just about stretch an octave on a standard keyboard -- and I don't have problems playing most guitar chords.
Research has found that beginners push down far too hard with their left hand, about twice as hard as experienced players. It's not a matter of brute force, it's all about getting your fingers and thumb and wrist in the right places and orientations. This is almost impossible to describe but easier to show. If you know a guitarist, ask them to show you how they do it.
Lessons from a properly trained teacher are very valuable for beginners because they stop you getting into bad habits which are hard to put right later. So I'd encourage you to have a few lessons as early as possible.

I often find my left thumb anchoring the underside of the fretboard where most people would still have it hanging over the top. This could be looked at as a bad habit but hey it works for my little digits
Dom. If you have a look at how classical guitar SHOULD be played it is as you describe here. Nothing wrong with that method. John: Welcome. Do your "Sair" fingers reside noth of the border?
