Yeah, it just kind of works after a while
You get a hand position that is comfortable and allows you to reach the strings

Position your fingers on the chord you want, THEN rest your wrist / palm. See where it sits confortably

I was leaving my wrist still, which meant i was contorting into odd positions. Move your wrist as well. \:\)

Have a look at and read this page:
http://pbguitars.co.uk/correct-position-for-left-hand-when-playing-guitar/

And this one:
http://www.rippingguitar.com/teach-yourself-how-to-play-guitar

These give a good idea of how to grab the neck when playing chords. At no time should you need to support the neck with your left hand (if you are playing right handed).

One of the problems of not having a teacher is that people on the internet cannot see what you are doing and correct you as you are trying to play.

Another problem is that people can teach you bad habits. Personally I do not like or approve of this hand position or the way they suggest you hold a plectrum. At least not as a starting point for beginners. So, look at this page and learn how not to do it!

Don't worry, my fingers are short -- I can only just about stretch an octave on a standard keyboard -- and I don't have problems playing most guitar chords.

Research has found that beginners push down far too hard with their left hand, about twice as hard as experienced players. It's not a matter of brute force, it's all about getting your fingers and thumb and wrist in the right places and orientations. This is almost impossible to describe but easier to show. If you know a guitarist, ask them to show you how they do it.

Lessons from a properly trained teacher are very valuable for beginners because they stop you getting into bad habits which are hard to put right later. So I'd encourage you to have a few lessons as early as possible.

Dave

Hi, Im new here but your name struck a note:) I have tiny fingers even though i am 6ft tall. My son overtook me in finger length when he was 12 and now his hands dwarf mine at 15.
Anyway it doesn't have to be a hindrance although i have to say to get the most out of playing get using your little pinky straight away and don't be afraid to use unorthodox fret hand positioning. I often find my left thumb anchoring the underside of the fretboard where most people would still have it hanging over the top. This could be looked at as a bad habit but hey it works for my little digits so don't be afraid to go against text book teaching although try that first and then develop your own way outside of the box to get where you need to be.

Good luck.

Dom.

Dom. If you have a look at how classical guitar SHOULD be played it is as you describe here. Nothing wrong with that method.
John: Welcome. Do your "Sair" fingers reside noth of the border?
