Hi, my guitar lead just broke and I want to get a new one for my Fender/Jackson. Budget it really £15 and I was looking at this: http://www.gak.co.uk/en/fender-tone-master-18-ft-instrument-cable-right-angle/45521

^ would that do the trick?

Thanks (1st post)

People far to often cheap out on cables which imo are an improtant part of the equastion, do you really need 18 foot?

I've personally had many planet waves cables and while they may not sound as good as the boutique cables that are hand made which cost 50 quid plus for 10 foot they are decent and good sounding cables...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Planet-Waves-Class...=item3cb99729d6

Infact that should do the job nicely I think I have one of those and it's a really nice cable...

Just read the info on the tonemaster seems good enough so either would suit i'd only go for a right angled lead if you have a V style guitar with the jack in the lower wing, you may not like it going into a standard shaped guitar like a strat...

you might aswell go for the fender cable but I know planet waves have a great repair/replcement service... should it break...

cheers for the help man \:\) im going into Dawsons tomorrow so i'll probably pick one up there, if not then i'll check out the soundwave cables.. and yes I do need a right angle jack at one end for my V Jackson guitar. But I don't mind it going into my Fender also \:\)

I would actually vote against Planet Waves- I find they break easily, and having moulded plugs you can't fix them yourself. Whirlwind Leaders are brilliant if you can find them- not silly money and I've never had one break

If you have a soldering iron you can make your own- saves a fortune in the long run!

I'd recommend looking at ClearTone Cables from Award Session. Hand made to order, good quality, and decent prices.

Can I resurrect this thread?

I've been checking out cables after acquiring a Fender Mustang amp.

Decided to go for the Fender Gold only to discover this is now discontinued and I might be lucky to get one from last consignment to be shipped at the end of the month.

So what's the alternative? Some speak highly of Planet Wave and my local dealer (a Fender Premium dealer) is trying to push me down the route of Monster Rock.

At a cost of £39.99 I'm not so keen to be pushed down that route. This price is similar to Fender Platinum but with my level of incompetence I'm thinking £20 is about the right amount to spend.

I expected choosing & acquiring a cable to be as easy as an easy thing, but oh no.

Cables sold out, discontinued, too expensive, too cheap, only for Bass, only Accoustic, too long etc, the list goes on & on.

Anyone got any thoughts/recommendations

Thanks

The first thing is to decide what you are going to use it for. Are you intending to go gigging or is it just for home use? Do you intend using it for recording? Will it be used in an electrically noisy environment?
I only use my amp at home and I am never more than 8ft from my amp. As a result I just buy cheap cables. In fact it is years since I even bought a cable as I always seem to get one with the cheap Guitars I buy.
As for cables for a bass or an acoustic my personal opinion is that this is just marketing "hype". That's hype spelt C-R-A-P. Unless you are using Hi-Fi quality equipment and professional recording gear you wouldn't see any difference. Even then you may be able to measure it but I doubt you would be able to hear it.
Okay. Had my rant. Feel better now!

I agree with Jocko that there is a bit of hype/marketing going on with cables, although not to say that you shouldn't look around and consider what you need. This is an interesting article on guitar cables, written by a qualified electrical engineer - I find this guy's website is pretty useful for lots of stuff to do with guitar electrics and amplification.

I have to agree with the previous two correspondents. Cheap thin leads with moulded plugs are to be avoided, but any reasonably priced lead will do very nicely unless you are gigging regularly, in which case you might want something a bit more rugged. I use Klotz leads because the cable itself is soft and very pliable so it doesn't insist on staying with the kinks from the original packaging for the first few years of its life. The cable near the rubber-housed plugs gives up the ghost eventually, and then I just cut it off about six inches from the plug and replace the plugs with good quality Neutrik plugs. I've got one I've been using for a good 10 years and it's still fine.

Another innovation I like is the Planet Waves switched plugs, so you can switch it off before disconnecting it so you don't get a nasty crack through the amp when you pul the lead out of the guitar, but it's also handy to switch off when you leave the guitar on the stand between sets. One word of caution on these, though, is that mine is about 6 years old and has become unreliable and I haven't ahd a chance to check it out to see what's wrong yet ...

I've been using Fender California cables for a while and had no problems with them. They come in a dinky range of colours and are very affordable.
