I recently fell victim to a virus attack which rendered my laptop useless and unable to open Int explorer. I've since bought and installed Norton 2011 antivirus which have "cleansed" my laptop, however I still can't open Internet explorer. I'm connected to the internet (my BTHub indicates that I am) but when I click on iexplorer button - nothing happens. Also - I can't download windows updates or Norton updates so effectively I can't access the internet. I can't system restore either....! I've tried the usual suspects (restoring default Internet settings, making sure the dial up and proxy server box is not ticked etc.).

Anyone help?

Hi Martin,

Sorry to hear of your problems. I'm by no means a computer expert, but I would hazard a guess that although Norton has cleaned up your laptop, some critical files affected by the virus have been corrupted. I would suggest re-loading your operating system, preferably with a 'repair' rather than full instal option, if available, so as not to lose any data stored. Just in case you do need to do a full installation which also involves re-formatting the hard disk (which will wipe out all existing data), I'd suggest backing up your files if you are able to do so. This worked for me last time I had a similar virus attack. Good luck.

Thanks Elkay.

I'm typing this on my laptop! Ha! Actually it's a hollow victory as I've had to open Safari. Iexplore seems completely dead....

Hi Martin,
Sorry to hear about this. My strong recommendation to you is to wipe your laptop hard drive and reinstall everything from scratch.
Do that while not on the Internet, then install Norton or whatever you choose, then try going back online and downloading all the updates before anything else.
That might sound a bit harsh but it's been compromised, and despite what Norton tells you you cannot be 100% sure it is now Ok.
I hope your files etc are backed up of course! If not you might find a local company that can get a copy of your files before you wipe and reinstall.

edit: even though Safari is working, I would still do the wipe/reinstall.

Agree with elkay. Although wiping/reinstalling will definitely solve the problem (unless there's a hardware fault of some sort) it's really the nuclear option.

Hi Martin,

You don't say which versions of Windows or IE you are (were) running.
Not being able to run Windows update is related to not being able to run IE;
not being able to run Norton update,is more worrying, suggesting something is not 100% cleaned, or some damage is still to be repaired.

A repair install, as suggested by elkay, should help if it's just damage repair, and its relatively quick; but if something nasty is still in there you'll soon be back to square-one.

Fully wiping and re-building, as suggested by others, will give you a clean start – unfortunately with Windows this isn't quick, and there are a few “gotcha's” to watch for. If this is your preferred choice of action, before starting:
  • back-up your data, documents; photos; music – but also remember e-mails (if you don't use web-based email, like hotmail or google-mail) and email address-book; favorites (you wouldn't ant to loose your link to Guitars uk etc); rss/news reader settings; etc
  • note your usernames and passwords, eg for email, skype, and/or any site sign-ons you may use - if using wireless, don't forget your own network!
  • Make sure you have details for any software registrations (eg MS Office, or Norton) as you will need to re-apply these once they've been re-installed.
  • Finally make sure you have copies of all drivers and software, you need to get your laptop working again (eg network/wireless drivers; and Norton - if you downloaded it, etc).

Hope all this bs helps a little,
rrm

Try re-installing IE itself. You can do this from Microsoft site. If that doesn't work then the nuclear option looks like the answer.

a few years ago my mums laptop had internet connection issues. Turned out she had several different security programmes runing at the same time. Disabling any of the windows security and uninstalling the anti virus programmes not needed and running only 1 ( Norton in your case ) solved the problem.

also when you do get it sorted i wouldnt use internet explorer as a browser, it really sucks. firefox or chrome are much better.

I agree. I use Chrome all the time now.

Martin,

How are you getting on with your IE problems? If you're still having issues with IE, PM me and I'll try to help.

Cheers.
