Hi all,
Thanks for all the replies. A combination of all the above finally helped me sort this out! I had a nasty virus that basically disabled all internet connections to known antivirus sites (making updating AV software impossible). I guess it's quite clever in a way...! In addition to that, I also had SCHost (which really slowed my PC down).
Anyway - it's all sorted now.
Thanks Amasa for the offer - it's very kind of you! I'll take you up on it if it comes back (over my dead body!!)..

Martin - glad to hear your problems are sorted.
Some malware can lurk around in a hidden state. A favourite hiding place is the windows restore folder. Essentially, you think you've disinfected your machine, then at some point do a system restore and find the virus/malware has returned.
I'd recommend backing up all your essential data to other media, preferably solid state such as an SD card. May be an idea to encrypt that using FreeOTF or Truecrypt. Truerypt is probably more feature rich, but FreeOTFE is much easier to configure, i.e. it's harder to do an insecure install of FreeOTFE whcih can be found here: FreeOTFE
You should then delete all IE temporary files and cookies by going to the tools tab in IE and selecting Internet Options. In the 1st (general tab) you will see the approriate button.
You should then switch off the system restore option in Control Panel and select 'delete contents of swap file on exit'. Reboot your laptop and the system restore folder will be 'emptied', as will the swap file contents. Re-enable system restore, it's up to you if you choose to put back the swap file setting, but it's good security practise to have the swap file empty on power down.
Don't surf the net logged on as an admin user, if necessary create a limited account for that.
Think you've said you've gone for Norton, good choice, but if you've gone for the 360 version, beware the registry optimiser function. When I used it it managed to dissociate guitar Pro 6 from it's files.
