Hi everyone,

Just thought it'd be fun to share our views on the odd lyrics we hear in music we love or hate.

Regardless of genre there are lyrics that are simply genius, some that are cringe worthy, some that make naff all sense and some that infuse hatred.

Both cringe worthy and damn right lazy is the lyric:

'even food don't taste that good'

Brian Adams of course, I heard the song on the radio this afternoon - it was the inspiration for this thread lol.

And out of pure hate, if I did own a shotgun, then J-Lo would definitely be 'getting down on the floor'

Short Change Hero by The Heavy.

"This ain't no place for no hero"

Triple negative much? I'm not actually sure which way this line is going because of it.

The song itself is actually pretty good though \:D The Heavy - Short Change Hero

I love Billy Bragg. He writes some brilliant, brilliant lyrics. Just about the whole of New England is pure witty poetry, but I love the lines

"I loved you then as I love you still,
Though I put you on a pedestal
They put you on the pill"

and my favourite ...

"I saw two shooting stars last night,
I wished on them but they were only satellites,
It's wrong to wish on space hardware,
I wish, I wish, I wish you'd care"

And the other one I love of his is ...

"I am the milkman of human kindness,
I will leave an extra pint"

Billy Bragg and Charles Dickens working in perfect harmony! \:\)

I have always loved the line from REM

"I think I thought I saw you try"

Ian Dury:

Van Gogh did some eyeball pleasers
He must have been a pencil squeezer
He didn't do the Mona Lisa
That was an Italian geezer

One I really hate is the opening of the great jazz standard "Misty":

Look at me
I'm an helpless as a kitten up a tree

How sickly is that? Makes me want to throw up!

I like the Police line (which they used in two songs):

"I have to tell the story of a thousand rainy days since we first met,
It's a big enough umberella, but it's always me who ends up getting wet."

And for some reason I love the Nick Drake song, Saturday Sun, which goes:

"Saturday sun,
Came without warning,
So nobody knew what to do"

My favourite all time singer/songwriter/lyricist is Jackson Browne. This is the opening line to "The Late Show"

"Everyone I've ever known has wished me well
Anyway that's how it seems, it's hard to tell
Maybe people only ask you how you're doing
'cause that's easier than letting on how little they could care
But when you know that you've got a real friend somewhere
Suddenly all the others are so much easier to bear"

All his songs are filled with such honesty, sometimes a cruel honesty but nontheless very poignant.
He wrote some fantastic songs when he was just 17! How could someone that age have such an insight into peoples feelings is amazing.
