I have given up on trying to do anything practical with EnergyXT2. Yesterday I got to grips with Reaper and was so impressed I downloaded the new Reaper 4 and bought myself a licence. I can see myself having lots of questions but I am looking forward to doing some useful work with Reaper. This is a whole new ball game to me, but I am keen to learn. I will keep you informed as to how things go.

Hi Jocko

I recently discovered Reaper too, It's great. Seems a lot simpler to use that a lot of software out there. I haven't done much with it yet only a small test jam to a backing track I found (link below) but I intend to get back to it.

How are you interfacing with your PC? I just connected my guitar cable to my line in socket of the PC, I was pretty surprised with the sound quality to be honest.

If you have any tips or tricks let me know and I'll do the same.

Dave.

I use a Behringer UCG102 USB interface which cost me about £30 from Amazon. The benefit if this is the ASIO drivers have low latency so you hear it and record it the moment you play. The problem I found when I used the line-in with Audacity, which I was fiddling with at the time, was that if I recorded a piece then played it back to record next track, the two tracks were out of synch.

Reaper is a fantastic product and oh so very VERY powerful! I've been using it for about 9 months and have hardly scratched the surface. The world of VSTs and VSTi's is amazing if you get in to recording full tracks with 'other' bits n bobs including drums.

ASIO is definitely the way forward!

Good to see people picking up on Reaper!

I still find it amazing that for under £100 you can equip yourself with a fully-functional multi-track DAW and a reasonable audio-digital interface. Obviously you also need a reasonable PC, but even so. I spent £400 on a Yamaha porta-studio back in 1987 and it's like comparing a torch to Blackpool illuminations.

Some hopefully useful links:

Worth a look. Be warned it can be a bit overwhelming at first - but some good stuff in there.

I've put some tips and tricks up on my web site covering home recording: software, hardware, recording and songwriitng. These have been gleaned from my experiences over the years and they might be helpful. I just gave the site a makeover and made some additions. Anyway, they're here if you want to take a peek:

I think my brother would be highly interested in learning about Reaper since he expressed a desire to turn his room into a recording studio. I ought to tell him to visit http://www.guitars.co.uk
