Looking for a wee bit of advice here.
I play lead in a punk/heavy rock band and I'm in a constant battle with the rythm player/frontman over guitar levels. He uses a Gretsch through a Big Muff and a Danelectro Fabtone and I use a Les Paul through a Boss Overdrive and electro Harmonix Linear power booster.
What could I use so my lead parts cut through his racket?
My current setup just makes everything sound very muddy.

You mentioned no amps; do you go direct to the PA? Do you use monitors? Who decides on relative volumes?

We generally use whatever amps are supplied by the venue. We're no big and important enough to haul our own backline around just yet. It's Marshall stacks more often than not mind you. The volumes are usually set by the sound engineer during soundcheck.

Slip him a fiver to turn the other guy down a few dB once you're on! \:D

A graphic EQ with the mids boosted and the level notched up a few DB's, or a wah pedal will bring you up in the mix.

The downside to plugging into anything is you have little time or control to set it perfectly or close too...

What exactly is the linear power booster? im guessing something that is generally aimed at boosting tube/valve preamp sections so may muddy things up or clip a digital or modeling amp..not something that sound pleasant...

But the EQ/wah or combination of both will help you cut through for leads the eq can just be switched on or off once you've set it hit it then it will raise the frequencies if you wnat or just the volume...

Have you tried talking to him? If you're in the same band it's in both your interests to make sure it sounds right out front.

Oh aye, countless times. To no avail. I'm really just asking around to see if there's an alternative to us butting heads over it.

The power booster is exactly that. Gives me a wee bit of boost during solos. Just not enough. Got a Cry Baby Wah Wah, so I might give that a wee go before I invest in an EQ.

Cheers for the advice guys.

The boss EQ's arent that expensive you may find one used for a good price it will do what you want and more, the mxr 10 bands are probably overkill.

Sounds like your toher gutiarist has the cant let anyone else be heard over him syndrome..

The wah should cut through the mix incredibly just push it down and wail away...

We're both just as bad as each other. It's just trying to convince him that I'm the more important one. ;\)

Hmmmmm therein lies the problem. \:\)
I think you need a properly independent person to 'engineer' you and not some venue guy. Someone who knows exactly how you are trying to sound and can get out front during your sound checks. On stage you've not a chance of knowing what you, as a band, are sounding like.
Its a problem every band has, if that's any consolation.
