Yep got the T shirt Dellio.
Had very similar probs a few times.
It actually can make a band work better, having this competition...but sometimes (often) it creates a mushy wall of teeth rattle.
Balance. If you can't get someone independent out front (as Lurcher suggests), just do what he's not doing.
If he has a thick heavy sound (hogging the mid bands) go up, boost your mid-trebles. If he'#s hogging the high band, go mid-bottom.
If he has humbuckers, use single coils and vice versa. Oh also, if he's using loads of overdrive, clean your sound up a bit and boost the volume.
Really volume works in a band situation by contrasts and how each member uses the frequencies. Look at what the drummer and bass player are using too.
You may have a bass player filling the mid range, hence both Guitars are squeezed out...get him to drop it down.
Just a few ideas that I've found made a difference over the years.

Clean up my sound. That's something I'd never actually thought of. Worth a shot.
Was thinking of picking up one of those electro Harmonix treble boosters. Anyone had any experience?

I used an old top boost years ago. Same one Jeff Beck used when he played an SG through an AC30. That combination needed it.
Les Pauls vary a bit in their tone. Older Customs were all mahogany bodies and had that rather dark sound. Most others get better top through the Maple cap. His Gretch is probably quite bright and that would make him cut through everything. Ideally he should take it down a bit for your breaks but I'm thinking an EQ would do you better service than a treble boost which could just double the 'clang' factor.

Cool, got a few ideas to try out now. Hopefully one of them will do it. Gigging on Thursday so I dare say I'll find out then.
