Ive got my first lesson tommorow as much as ive been practicing from my begineers book, everything i seem to strum to, in my mind does not sound like the songs they are ment to accompany, i have got a few songs ive been following that i can make sense of( Three little birds just down strums but sounds better if i slap the strings after each strum in my mind, Hey Jude just down strums between beats and scarborough fair which is an arpeggio style. I seem to keep losing my rythm in all the other songs i try, any ideas how i can improve this?
Thanks

In a word: practice. Rhythm comes with practice. Practice counting when you are strumming. Practice counting when you are listening to music. Practice: 1, 2, 3, 4 on simple 4/4 songs, or 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & if you can feel the half beats which would equate to upstrokes on the guitar. Some songs you will find you are counting 1, 2, 3 or perhaps 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. The slower the tempo of the song the easier it is to start counting.
You will do well if you put in practice time during the week, between lessons; it will come quickly, so just be patient and take small steps.

Well ive had my first lesson, and sad as it may seem, i very much enjoyed it, you guys were right, ive got a bit of homework but i think ive nailed most of it already, reading TAB, nursery rhymes, scales, some struming patterns, new chords with very hard finger positioning(for me at this stage) and there is 1 peice i cant remember for the life of me even though i have the TAB in front of me, i would love to explain but its so far beyond me i dont know where to start. Cheers

Well ive been practicing every day on my home work, my fingers are so numb that i cant tell when im fretting the strings or not i think i have improved, things seem to flow a bit smoother now, i just cant get the G string nailed with my 2nd 3rd and 4th fingers, it feels like its proper kakanded, im sure i will get the hang of it when my fingers grow some musles. Thanks for reading.

It will all come in good time, just don't push yourself too hard at the start. By the end of September you will be laughing at that last post!
