Fantastic photos, looks wonderful.... always toyed with the idea of going, but never got around to it - you may have just swung me with these... How long did you go for and have you got any tips?

It's a fantastic place. My advice would be to have 2 or 3 days in Reykjavik, but get a car and drive around the rest of the country the rest of the time. We had 3 days of each and would've gladly traded a day in Reykjavik for more exploring! If we went again I can imagine we'd have a night in Reyk at each end then as much time as we could afford in the outdoors (and we're not even particularly "outdoorsy" types!)

There are glacier tours and stuff from the city but they cost a fortune because you have to drive half a day to get to the big glaciers and the best waterfalls. You also get restricted on how long you stay anywhere because they're on a schedule. With a rental car you can go where you like. It's a lot of driving but as long as you don't mind that it's SO worth it. And once you're at the national parks if you want to go up and walk on a glacier those trips are really cheap because you're not paying the extra towards the petrol for the bus \:\)

As for locations, there's a big road right round Iceland called Route 1. We basically went as far round that as we had time for in 3 days- pretty much all the south coast. We'd love to go back and do the whole circuit one day, and maybe even get a 4x4 so we'd be allowed on the internal roads- most are illegal to attempt in a car \:D
