Looking at getting a relatively inexpensive 20 / 40 watt modelling / effects combo.

These two catch my eye - I tend to favour VOX for the 60's sound (guessing my Casino would sound great through it), but also have a Tele so the Fender may suit better.

Look forward to your thoughts / comments

p.s. Primarily for fun use at home but possibly use for gigging so do these have line outs for a mixer / need to be miced / or loud enough as stand alone ?

I'd honestly pick the Fender if your predonimantly on the clean and lighter driven side of things...everything i've heard from them have been really impressive and responsive A 60 watt amp even solid state should handle most gigs.

But if you needed extra volume it would probably have an extension cab out or you'd mic it up or go direct into the PA something im assuming the msutangs would have as a standard feature...

While the Valvetronix arent bad I wouldnt really find them that good in a live situation as they dont cut through all that well..

plus the cleans on the mustangs are superb and the technology is far more advanced compared to the vox stuff which is probably quite old now and on the level of a pod 2.0 or XT.

Chappers/Andertons did a good amp shootout and I think the mustang beat everything for cleans and lighter drive sounds...

You may find you prefer the valvetronix over the mustang but im sure if you checked a mustang out you'd want nothing else...

Having used the Voxesin my old band theyre good, but I now own the Mustang 1 and it's stunning. The AC30 is a little light on treble, but as soon as you turn that knob to full it sings- highly recommended- i use mine more than my VC15 at home these days

Thanks for the comments.
I've been looking at the software videos on YouTube - am I right in thinking that 16 of the presets are fully programmeable i.e. you can actually assign any amp modelling, plus effects, to any of the 16 presets using the software ?

Yup- spot on. The FUSEsoftware and ableton recording stuff is what sold it for me initially. I basically set up about 4 presets involving Princeton/Deluxe/Ac30/Plexi and hardly use anything else.

Thanks....one more question...does the amp have any line out capability or does it have to be miked ?

It has a headphone out that I would assume could used as line out, but I can never remember which of those is higher output, so I'm not sure how useful it would be- tho it does work well plugged into audacity on a PC if you can bothered setting up the USB interface just to record a quick idea

Jut remembered I have some clips recorded if you want to hear what it can do once you get into the decent Princeton/Vox type sounds

Thanks for that - most useful.

Looking at the Fender website it does say that the headphone socket also doubles as a line out

Have done some reading- headphone out is generally a high signal level than line out, so you'd need to turn the master vol down a little to stop it clipping. But tbh you're unlikely to want the master up ery high anyway, so it's all gravy
