Very true.

In acoustic bands of various sorts over many years, from small groups to full orchestras, I've never had any problem hearing the others, or hearing myself. And of course you tend not to get loudness wars in acoustic bands, with the possible exception of brass players (but even they have to watch out or their lip goes).

Some of the better drummers I've played with have been rather quiet, and some of the worst have been very loud. There seems seems to be a quantity vs. quality tradeoff with drumming.

I think one of the problems with amplified instruments is that they tend to be very directional. This is also true of brass, especially trumpets. If you're standing in a line facing an audience, it can be very hard to hear the amp on the opposite side of the stage. But this isn't usually a problem at rehearsals, where you tend to play facing towards each other.

I agree with Scrooge and Pete, getting the amp at around head level and pointing towards the guitarist makes a big difference.

I also own an AC30, I love it. It can sound a bit tinny if the settings aren't spot on, I turn the tone cut up pretty high. What model AC30 do you own Pete? What's the name of your band?

Hope everything works out Tinyghost.
