Kind of at random, I found myself browsing on Chase Direct's website today, and noticed a nice-looking Shine SIL 510 guitar in a deep transparent red. Basswood body, maple (laminated I guess!) top, semi acoustic (single f-hole), vaguely strat/PRS-ish in shape. Hmm... don't have (but would like) a semi to "complete" my collection. Plus the strat-like shape appeals - just a personal thing, but I don't seem to get on very well with the classic Gibson ES335 type shape for a semi. Looked on Youtube - there is someone playing one of these things! Shine SIL 510 demo on YouTube - like it! seems to have a good bit of semi-acoustic character in the tone. Looked around on the web, found some more info: info on hamony central forum - the pictures on the flyer in the first post do look very tempting.
Anyway, long story short, I've just ordered the thing from Chase music in Manchester, paid an extra 9.95 for next day delivery (should get in on Thursday, since I ordered after 2 pm): Chase Direct, Shine SIL 510 TR .
Anyway, unlike me to order a guitar without playing it, so a bit of a calculated (I hope) risk, I guess the price just got me in the end. If the guitar needs a little work, like a bit of fret dressing, I will be up for that, but we will see. I think this is an old i.e. discontinued model, and Chase have a policy of buying up such stock and selling on at a discount. Most things I read on the net seem pretty positive about Shine Guitars, hope that turns out to be a good omen. Eek! what have I done? Anyone on here have any experience of Shine stuff by the way? cheers!

Good price for a Korean made guitar. There's a lot to be said for 'end of line' Guitars.
Try before you buy is only good up to a point. I don't know if a guitar is REALLY right for me until I've had the thing a few months and we've got used to each other (or found we're incompatible!).
At that price you're not taking much of a gamble. The YouTube demo you linked ought to make you feel a bit confident.
Good luck - hope it's a good 'un!

Cheers Jocko, that's what it looked like to me too - nice guitar, not much cash. Hope that turns out to be correct and not a case of too good to be true! Should find out tomorrow if the delivery works as it should. As to the modding, it's always a danger with me, but I think for this one I will resist the temptation to do too much (maybe just add a coil tap switch), and probably leave the pickups as is if they are decent. But I'm getting ahead of myself here... Will let the forum know how things turn out though.

to "complete" my collection.
Ah! The eternal falacy of those of us afflicted with chronic GAS! Our collections will never be complete, and we know it, but we keep going back .... will we ever learn? ;-)
Very tasty looking guitar - I like shine because they have the courage to go with their own designs. They do some very tasty-looking double necks.

They do some very tasty-looking double necks. A double neck, now that's a thought, don't have one of those, might come in handy... Of course I'm well aware my collection will never be complete, some Guitars I still don't have for example are: 1. a 12-string acoustic 2. a 12-string electric 3. a plug-in type nylon string/classical 4. something with a Bigsby tremolo - nice for adding a bit of shimmer to jazzy chords 5. a Strat - surely everyone should have a Strat in their arsenal? - probably you need 2, one with rosewood fingerboard, one with maple... 6. a Les Paul... ditto the above 7. an SG... 8. a gypsy jazz i.e. Selmer/Maccaferri type acoustic 9. a plug-in type steel-string acoustic 10. a "super-strat" rock/fusion type machine with floyd-rose trem etc. 11. a Dobro type acoustic, not that I play slide guitar or anything, but still... and so on... but I think I have to admit that I have all the Guitars I need, just not all the ones I want! A song by the Rolling Stones springs to mind. But cheers for the positive comments on my latest purchase, helps to convince me I haven't gone bonkers!

What caused you to prune your collection to such an extent Dave? Just curious - I think I would have wanted to keep at least one of the Fenders.
Also, the Minarik Inferno intrigues me... what kind of guitar is that? It must have something good, since you kept it!

I have got my new Shine SIl-510 already - looked on my email this morning - a message from the delivery company saying "we have deliverd your parcel, it has been signed for, hope you are happy with our service"... Hmm, would be if I actually had taken delivery and signed for it, but its news to me. Had a look outside the front door - we have a front garage with a separate outside door - and there it was! I'm pretty sure the delivery guy was supposed to ring the bell and get me to sign for it... Never mind (he's probably rushed off his feet, so I'll forgive him for saving a bit of time this way) - at least I have it.
Chase had packaged it well I think, the usual wedge shaped tough cardboard box, bits of packing polystyrene inside, plus the guitar in one of those foamy plastic bags. There were several layers of thick bubble wrap secured with "fragile" marked tape around the outside of the box.
Unwrapped carefully, gingerly extracted the guitar from the foam plastic bag. Headstock emerges - looks very nice, Shine logo nicely done in mother-of-pearl, lovely bit of quilt maple on the front, nicely done binding, "Made In Korea" small sticker on the back. Then the neck, nice binding, nice-looking dark rosewood, eagle inlays nicely done, frets look clean and evenly done, reasonably well finished at the ends. Then the body - wow! is this thing nice or what!! Beautiful dark-cherry sunburst, over lovely looking quilt maple (obviously just the top veneer, but of course I knew tbis wasn't going to be a carved solid top). The binding around the front is again very well done. The satin hardware looks pretty good also, the machine heads seem good - smooth and positive to adjust (they are Grovers).
Anyway, I was just staring for a bit in disbelief at what £172 including delivery, has got me. This, to me looks like at least a £400 plus guitar, and a very nice one at that. The back of the body/neck appeared in the photos I saw online to be finished in black, in fact it is a very dark translucent red-brown, and you can see the grain of the wood.
A quick (acoustic) play after a tune-up, this thing plays pretty well - action nice and low with no noticable buzzing, and the guitar sounds resonant and responsive. The frets really are pretty well done - looks like they have been levelled and dressed at the factory. The ends are evenly cut, lying nicely over the binding at the edges. They have been wedge-cut at the ends, and then some smoothing done to remove any sharp edges. No need to do any work on them really, except for a bit of a polish I think as some are a bit tarnished - it does look like this is an end-of-line guitar that has been sitting around unplayed for quite a while (possibly years...).
The top of the guitar is quite thick (about 8.5mm having measured inside the f-hole), but it still seems to have the semi-acoustic sound to me, at least strummed acoustically.
Picking a few holes, and this is nit-picking: The strap buttons seem a bit low quality somehow, and one is a bit tarnished, I guess from the guitar being stored a long while. I will probably replace them. The neck pickup appears to have been put in so that the underneath edge has caught the lip of the pickup cavity, causing the pickup to sit at an angle, rather than lie parallel to the strings. I'm sure this will be easily fixed though, probably just needs raising up, and re-lowering to sit properly in the cavity. Finally, the inside of the f-hole is a little rough looking, though this is totally un-detectable from a few feet away. Not something that bothers me really, I don't propose to do anything to improve it.
Overall, and I am aware of the "I've just got a new guitar" honeymoon effect, this really is about the best decision I've made in a long time. The guitar is simply a knock-out, I can't believe how much guitar this is for the money, and it seems hard to believe that Shine could not sell all of this model while they were being made. It's an absolute knockout, I'll get some pictures as soon as I've calmed down a bit and got the idiotic grin off my face...
