Ive memorised a few Chords but trying to change between them quickly so it sounds good just isnt happening, will it really come wi practice like they say it will ?
Its demoralising when you see guitarists strummin away and not even looking at there guitar, damn I envy them !

As a fellow Novice I can say, yes it will come.

Stick with the common major chords, A, D, G, E, C, perhaps a E minor and you'll soon remember where your fingers should be.

In my case, there has been no alternative but daily practice.

My main problem is learning rythmn. My teacher was pulling his hair out tonight trying to get to play a particular rythmn.

On getting back home, 30 minutes practice later and I think I'm nearly there.

So keep on practising. In my view there is no alternative

Sorry, couldnt resist. \:\)

Yes, it will. \:\)
Pick two chords and just practise practise practise

Start in the same position each time
So thumb behind the neck and your 4 fingers together, place them on the strings in the chord shape, then go back to the start position, then go to the next chord, start very slowly and build up the muscle memory

Get a metronome and do it at say 60 BPM, but only strum on the 4th beat use the other three to locate the fingers. As you get quicker switch every 3rd, 2nd and finally on every beat

I have been playing for years but when I try to introduce a chord, I do not normally use, I struggle as any novice does. It is just a case of playing it very slowly and accurately and the speed comes naturally as the muscles learn.
If you start slowly and accurately the speed will come. If you start quickly and slovenly the accuracy will NEVER come.
I still cannot play without frequently checking my left hand positioning. It hasn't stopped me getting a great deal of enjoyment and satisfaction from my guitar, over many years.

Im new here too but the advice ive had here has proven to be invaluble, yes keep practicing, ive only been learning for a month now and its taken this long for me to get to grips with different chord changes, scales and playing a few songs, it feels good when you get it right, keep going its worth it

Thanks for the advice, I can be a bit impatient at times not a good thing if your trying to learn something new, al go back to the basics and keep plugging away the metronome sounds a good idea.

Plenty of metronomes in the App Store.

The one I use shows the first beat in red, which I find very helpful

As I have said elsewhere, try playing rhythm along with a CD or mp3. I don't mean playing chords. Just damp the strings with your fretting hand and strum along with the music. This gives a good sense of timing.

2 tips.
Tip 1
What Jocko said is great to get a sense of the rhythm but don't always settle for 4/4 timing. Do that same exercise on some less common stuff. Jethro Tull recorded quite a few tunes in 5/4 and the likes of Yes and It Bites tried some very odd stuff (like 13/8 reversed emphasis every 2nd bar?) After a bit of that 4/4 will come spot on.
Tip 2.
Instant changes are not possible, no matter who you are. So you have to do the change just before the beat to be ready. With more and more practice, you'll get the time down to a good and completely un-noticed level.

Thanks for the input guys.

I think my main problem is recognising the rhythm by simply listening to the mp3.

I find it difficult recognising the guitar rhythm when I can hear the drum rhythm and vocals

Ideally I'd like to be able to strip away the vocals and all the other instruments so that I can simply listen to the guitar rhythm making it easier to copy

Any tips more than welcome
