"My name is Graham, and I am addicted to guitar projects. I first started modding about 4 years ago - nothing much, I just fitted a new neck pickup to a guitar I had. But that led to more... before I knew what was happening, I'd added a couple of push-pull pots, with series-parallel switching for each pickup. Then I had to shield it all. It all worked, I almost wish it hadn't, because that encouraged me to shield another guitar I had. Then I found out about treble bleed circuits, a simple mod, but I had to do it to all my Guitars. Then I fitted an extra floating neck pickup to my jazz guitar, plus made a new pickguard with mini-selector switch installed so I could switch between the pickups.

At this point it all seemed reasonably under control, sensible even - after all, they were all useful improvements, weren't they? But still, somehow I had to carry on - I decided to completely re-do the guitar I'd first worked on, installing a circuit that needed 8 separate mini-switches, plus new CTS pots. I still remember the mad buzz I got as I stripped away the old (perfectly good) wiring, and started drilling extra holes in the scratchplate. That kept me going for a while, but then I had to re-mod the 2nd guitar I'd done - fitting new pickups, plus 3 extra mini-switches. By this time I was spending hours hanging around Maplins, just looking at the switches, and browsing on Axesrus's website. I couldn't stop...

Indeed, I moved on to harder stuff - the complete guitar parts build... The insane rush as I planned it all, ordered all the bits, and waited for them to arrive. Of course, I had to have a nice complicated wiring scheme too. I'm ashamed to say that even before this guitar was complete, I'd already ordered another guitar - I told myself I wouldn't do anything, just play it as it was. Who was I kidding? before I knew what I was doing I'd ordered new pickups, pots, capacitor, 3-way switch from Axesrus. I'm still working on this guitar, but even as I do it I'm thinking of more guitar projects, some involving Guitars I don't even own. I must have spent hundreds of pounds on my habit - Help me.... "

You can help Graham, and people like him, by donating 2 pounds a month, or whatever you can afford, to guitar Project Addicts Anonymous, to help us in our vital work. Together, we can end the madness, thank you.

"My name is John, and I am addicted to guitar projects. I first started after buying a Squier Strat which had been stored in an attic. The hardware was corroded (even the numbers on the knobs had gone green) Before I knew what was happening I was changing bits that were okay. I fitted new machine heads and pick ups. I was on the slippery slope. A Stagg M350 I bought looked like it just needed set up but once I started the neck began to twist so I bought and fitted a replacement. I was now hooked. I started dealing to feed my habit, first repairing an old 70’s Kawai for an acquaintance then taking in set ups from workmates. Soon I was buying GEAR from the States. Fret rockers and truss rod keys. Radius gauges and nut files. That was it. There was no going back. I struck rock bottom when I bought the parts necessary to build my own Telecaster. My marriage was at risk as my habit led to 12 Guitars in the spare room and as my URGES led to me collecting and repairing amps.
Thankfully I am in remission at the moment, but a couple of spare necks, pick guards and the current Stew-Mac catalogue mean I am on a knife edge.
Let this be a warning to others out there.”

Thank you John, that can't have been easy - admitting you have a problem is the first step on the road to recovery though. A particularly harrowing account, you have been to some very dark places. The decent into dealing, and placing "orders" for gear directly from the States, is especially disturbing. Doing amps on the side as well, shocking... \:o

Little is known about GPA, except that it often (but not always) seems to affect men of a "certain age", and that it has a strong relationship with a another condition commonly known as GAS.

Does anyone else want to tell us their story? We are hear to listen... \:\)

I don't have a problem. Well I do, but it's that living in a flat I don't have the space to do as many projects as I'd like.. \:\(

Sad to see such an obvious case of GPAD (guitar projects addiction denial) \:\( - but all too common. Still, when you are able to admit you need help Sticky, we will be here for you. \:\)

All the symptoms are there. The postman threatened to take away my internet connection after delivering the last batch of bits, he'll be back any day now with enough parts to complete a J bass and I'm already thinking I could find a space for another Tele...

Would love to see some pics of any builds you've already done. I'm on the brink of ordering parts for a strat-build now... , what can you do?

Not a well lit shot but they all have a matching green-black sunburst effect

apart from this one, which will be finished as soon as another roll of shielding tape arrives

This one's the hardest to put down

Tru-oiled Jazz bass is next.
