I have read about balanced tubes/valves being fitted in the V3 position of a 3 valve preamp set up. As I know nothing about tubes/valves but am trying to learn, what is a balanced tube/valve and must it always be fitted in the V3 position?

I know about matched sets of valves, would that be the same thing?

Don't know, I hve just come across the mention of a balancved valve having been used in the V3 position but don't know if this is a requirement or an option.

I have to confess, as a confirmed valve amp user I know woefully little about them. I'm like someone who can drive but doesn't know what the dipstick is for!

Oh yeah, I opened the bonnet once, to continue the metaphor, and nearly electocuted myself! I was fixing a Peavey Classic 30. All that had happened was that one of the links between two PCBs had broken, so took the amp out of the chassis, reparied it, plugged it in and made sure the valves lit up again, then switched it off and loaded it back into the chassis. Shame I left it plugged in and touched one of the live wires while I was struggling with it. Not smart!

The V3 position is often (e.g. JCM 800 Marshals) the driver valve - a 12AX7 (for e.g.) contains 2 separate triodes and each one forms each half of the circuit that drives the power amplifier valves in a class AB sort of circuit (often called the phase spitter). If the two triodes in the valve are exactly the same (or if they can be balanced by some external circuitry) the distortion (like THD) will be less. Probably more important for Hi-Fi valve amps than for heavy metal.

Thanks, TT. So does this mean that you need a balanced valve in the V3 position or just a standard valve?
