Maybe a silly question but is it possible to get a steel strung guitar with the flat fretboard that classical Guitars have instead of the curved version?

Are there any technical reasons why this would not be possible?

I can think of no reason at all why it can't be done - probably has been in fact. But doesn't tend to happen in practice. Fretboard curve is a funny thing - the trend over time seems to have been to less-curved (higher radius) fingerboards, certainly with electric Guitars. I recently made a telecaster from parts which has a more pronounced curve to the fingerboard - supposedly it makes chord work a bit easier. But it has taken me a while to get used to it in fact, at first it felt more awkward to play (better now though).

Thanks Megi. I ask because I have been learning my first real piece of classical music, Romanza, on my steel string and find the barre combined with some of the stretches difficult to get clear notes but my kids nylon with its flat fretboard is some what easier to barre all six strings and stretch a couple of frets.

Incidentally I am finding one stretch impossible. In the E major part there is one chords barred at the fourth fret across all six string with middle finger on 3rd string fifth fret and little finger on 1st string at 8th fret. Any techniques for stretching fingers??

Hi, I think you probably mean the 5th fret barre chord that the chap in the clip below plays at 1 minute 8 secs? 2nd finger playing a 6th fret note on the 3rd string, little finger stretching up to the 9th fret on the high E string - is that the one?

I guess it is a bit of a b*&^%r, though the sort of thing that you can get with a bit of practice. I would say make sure to keep your left hand thumb well down at the back of the neck (not allowed to creep up towards the upper edge of the fingerboard), and also the left arm elbow should be fairly low towards the ground. Hope that makes sense, a bit hard to describe these things. This is a good example of why the "correct" classical guitar playing position, with the guitar resting on the left leg, left foot on a footstool etc. is good for this type of playing - it helps facilitate these kind of stretches. Although you'll probably find you can get it anyway with a bit of practice I suspect.

Let me know if any of that helps though!

EDIT: sorry, forgot the link: Romanza

Glad it helped - sometimes just seeing someone doing it helps more than anything - a picture tells a 1000 words as they say.

No wonder I was struggling ... I have been struggling for days to get the fourth fret right and was focusing so much on the fact that it didn't sound right because of the stretch that I missed the fact that it didn't sound right because I was playing the wrong barre !!

I think it is sorted ... well soon will be when i practice. lol

Thank you once again Megi. I fear I am going to be a pain in the rear to you on this forum! Sorry.

I think Colonel Gadaffi had a few little tricks, but his secrets have gone to his (secret) grave with him .... having said that the CIA could probably help \:D

Seriously though, just practice. I remember how impossible I found it to do a full 6 string barre on any guitar when I first tried it. It used to make a sort of "Thlunk" sound. Now I find it impossible to not be able to do it.

Absolutely agree - just keep trying to do it right - be fussy about this, and before too long it becomes natural. Amazing how it happens really, but it does.
