eski says there are better things than monitors & mixers for home use like what?
I did say it was only my opinion but, for me, if I am just playing at home on my own I can't see the point of using a mixer as I only have my guitar .... I might sing but I can hear myself over my guitar at home volume levels so I just sing without amplification. As for monitors, pretty much the same argument, I can hear my guitar from the amp and I can hear my vocal if I sing so I don't think I need it coming back at me through a monitor - I certainly wouldn't need two. Both mixers and monitors are essential in a live/band situation but until you get to that point why worry?
Personally, I would much rather spend my money on Guitars, amps, pedals, etc. particularly in the home scenario. I do have a mixer and some monitors but only use those when I need to for playing live (or maybe a band practice depending on the requirements on the night) not home use.
Just to be clear I wasn't having a dig in any way. It's your money so really you should spend it on what makes you happy.
Cheers, Richard.

I am pleased that George is curious.
If all this really is just for playing at home then as all the others are saying, it doesn't make much sense and I would agree that there are probably better things you could do with the money.
However, don't let us stop you; it's your money and your music.

I think it's inevitable that you're going to get some kind of hum, particularly with OD/Fuzz/Dist effects. I guess there are two ways around this:
- Turn the pedal off when it's not actually needed
- Put a Noise Gate in your pedal chain (at the end probably?)
I tend to just kick a pedal on when I want it or simply put up with the hum. When you're physically playing there's no real difference as far as I can tell. I don't think there's anything wrong with Noise Gates per se (having said that - apparently some can suck tone) I'd just rather have another pedal there.
To be honest pedals is a whole new topic but an interesting one.
What are you thinking about getting?
Richard.

Blimey that's a tough one - my own personal preference is on the drive side of things so I don't have as much of an opinion on modular effects.
In my limited experience I have found that buying pedals is a bit like buying Guitars - you kind of get what you pay for and you'll probably never be completely satisfied. As with Guitars the realtionship isn't linear, i.e. if you put a £100 pedal in a shoot out against a £50 pedal the £100 unit wouldn't be 100% better than the £50 one but it would almost certainly be better. On that basis I'd say go for the best you can afford.
Having said all that people generally say good things about behringer pedals in terms of VFM - I think they typically come in somewhere betwen £20 and £30. I also read a write up on some pedals from a company called Belcat a few months back that were really cheap and looked pretty sturdy - somewhere around £20 each. From memory I think their modular pedals came out better than their OD pedals. Then there is the Danelectro Fab range which again are around the £20 mark.
I have used a couple of Fab pedals in the past but they weren't that sturdy - I've since sold them. Other than that I can't really comment on any of the above as I've never used them.
Hope that gives you a starting point at least, Richard.
