Hi all,
i've just started to learn how to play, but i'm having a wee bit of a problem with holding down a string, as i cut off a wee bit of the tip of my finger, it's left a bit of skin right beside the nail, which i can't cut the nail down so far, hopefully this picture will show you what i mean, middle finger if you've not guessed

any ideas whats the best way to go about this?
cheers
EDIT: Maybe in wrong section of the furum, a Mod can move it if they want, sorry...

the bit actually grows a tiny bit of nail, it grows in rough & it snags on clothes etc, i have to keep it well trimmed
cutting it off would have to be done at the doc's or hospital
it's really the shape of my finger that gone, instead of being rounded, it's sloped.
but it's the length of the nail part that i can't cut, it stops/reduces from pressing down on the string properly

Have you tried asking a doctor?
I'm pretty sure a doc wouldn't suggest a home-op if it would bleed, but if this is an option you're still considering, then I'd recommend you only ever cut with sterilised kit - ideally a de-facto scalpel - and you should seek medical attention if you need it. Don't delay - I've just had an infection in my arm and without being melodramatic it was nearly 'curtains'. Trust me you don't want one.

lol, no, i wouldn't do it myself.
i've not long started learning, so this is the first hurdle, i'll ask the doc about next time i'm in, think i'll have to play on it catching on my clothes etc, just so he doesn't think it's cosmetic, if you know what i mean.
hope your feeling better

Have a look at Django Reinhardt playing. It is amazing what you can do without using all your fingers. wow
is that only 2 fingers?

I have a similar problem in that I removed , well a forklift, removed the end of my first finger and I had to relearn all the basics. Best advice I could give is to try and use your first third and especially the fourth finger.
Get a local tutor to have a look at what you can currently do and see if they can help you with some alternative chord shapes.
Have you also thought about alternative tunings and using a slide. A chap I know has a small hand that never grew to full size, a bit like the one that Jeremy Beadle had and this guitar player uses a slide and plays bass as well.
The biggest thing is DON'T GIVE UP!

Off the wall suggestion: Try playing a left handed guitar, lots of lefties play right handed. Both hands have a lot to do on guitar and its not such an obvious choice.

Actually Tiggs, that's what my son did he plays right-handed and he is left-handed normally. He came home from school one day promptly picked up my acoustic and played wonderwall. I didn't even know he'd been practicing. So 'Off the wall' works...
