Thinking that I need to bit of variety and was considering a new guitar (first one in 2+ years!).

Thing is I've been a bit out of the game in recent months so the market has moved on.....

So here's my desired spec - S-Style body (even "pumped" S such ESP/Ibanez)

2 humbuckers - with good gain potential (perferably not those ones they use on ESPs the name of which inexplicably escapes me), but not an over-ridding concern). H/H or H/S/H fine.

Now the bit that stops this being a "no brainer" is that I want a hard tail - so it's easy to change tunings without loads of tuning woes.

Charvel San Dimas looked an ideal choice - but has a floyd!

Budget is circa £600 - all brands considered!

No idea what these Guitars are like to play! but this looks nice to me:
Ibanez RGA32
Or maybe one of these if you want to spend a bit more... Ibanez RGA72
Or this one for another low cost option...
Ibanez SZR520

Just throwing the Ibanez stuff into the mix though, as I say, haven't tried them myself

The RGA certainly tick all the boxes - Having owned several RGs they do represent a logical choice - will look further.

I do like that schecter - the only downside being that I've never found a schecter that I've ever really taken to in terms of playing (much like SGs)

Another option that occurs to me is the Cort KX Custom - I know very little about Corts - so keen if anyone has any views. (the M600 looks interesting too).

Sound wise it needs to cover that classic rock/classic metal bracket - metallica/megadeth being as dirty as it needs to do (not looking for detuned shouty metal, but do like fooling with a alternate tuning to a point)

I have a Cort EVL K-6 and I must say the build quality is amazing, so no worries there. I've also played cheaper models and every one of them I found to be well above their price tag in quality and 'feel'.
The only downside is that some of them would benefit from a pickup change/upgrade. However, with Irongear offering good quality rock/metal pickups (Hot Slag and Dirty Torque come to mind) at around £30 each, that's not a lot to take off your budget price.
Cort necks are slinky but not as fragile feeling as the RG ones from Ibanez. More like their S series.
Why not have a talk with Richard and maybe pop up to his shop to get a proper feel? You will get the best impression there as he goes to a lot of trouble to have his Guitars playing well. (which many stores still don't bother to do)

Hot Slags are great for the money... (Esp if you reverse the magnet on the neck pickup, though not a job for the faint hearted I'm afraid)

Ah but they are 5 wire, so you can just reverse the polarity in how you wire it up.

Agreed - Irongear do turn out some awesome pickups.

Interestingly the KX is fitted with Seymours - so it hopefully would do away with the need to change (which I just know I'd never get round to!).

A visit to stratford on A would be an intesting option - though - could combine a bit of shopping with a photo trip.......though need to find a dog friendly B&B as it's a bit of trip.

Brian. That's just too sensible. I never thought of it, nor do I know which wire is which...

There's no set rules among makers of pickups. Fortunately, most brands come with a little leaflet that explains the purpose of each wire, its colour and how to get what you want from it for the basics. Axetech and Irongear sites have vast numbers of wiring diagrams dedicated to the Irongear colout coding, too.
For variable phase switching its a simple job of having a DPDT switch, either as a push-pull on a pot or a separte switch, that crosses the 'hot' wire with the shielded ground, thus taking the reverse signal from the pickup. (that's why its a bigger job with 2-wire unshielded and those are best with a magnet spin)
A look at the Axetech diagram for the full Jimmy Page 2 wiring is an education!
