Just wondered how you guy's learned to play ? Can you really teach yourself with the help of all those lessons on Youtube or are lessons from a Pro the answer ? Iam at the stage where changing between chords is proving difficult and so frustratinggggggggggggg Arghhhhhhhhh !

All I got from the few lessons I had was a badly built Telecaster. "Dont buy a Fender, I can build you one better." He couldn't and it wasn't. If I learned anything it was bits and pieces from various library books, if youtube had been around back then I'd have made good use of that too. I think you need to try as many methods as you can, what works for one person might do nothing for another (same goes for teachers), but the only thing that makes chord changes easier is to keep on doing them. It will all fall into place sooner or later.

I haven't learned a great deal from free YouTube lessons - it's a bit of pain the time it takes to sort the wheat from the chaff. And there's not much wheat.
I have learned a lot from JamPlay where they have a set of very skilled teachers. It is very well structured and lessons follow a logical path - it is a pay site - but at around £10 a month for a years subscription it's a lot cheaper than local lessons. No travelling miles to teh lesson. And you can take a lesson when you feel like it - not the same time every week, when often you're likely knackered after a days work.
Up till recently I was self taught over many years and I did make some progress. But I would say two years on JamPlay has taught me at least as much as teh previous ten years teaching myself. But then I'm a crap teacher!

Never heard of JamPlay. Sounds like a good site.
I tried to teach myself many years ago but failed miserably.
This time round (July this year) I decided to go the lesson route.
30 mins every Tuesday night, then at least an hours practice every night. Works for me :-)

I do not think there is a magic wand here to help anyone. It is more to how you pick information up, and to how you use it.
Driving a car you can only get so far to pass your test, then the the real learningt starts. I think Y-tube helps in many a way, then again it is how you see and use what you see. Some learners can pick instructions up very fast and eat more, than you can give. I see this with new workers where i am, some will get going near on right away, some others not so.
My wife, has to shown many a time to get what is shown in to practice, as with all, time will get you there in the end, some quicker than others.
@bry, are you still anti fender, they have much improved.

I agree with the lessons, they can only be good. I think if you take to many would you be developing your own method or some one else. How many lessons, that is the string length, or how long.

No, I never was, the bloke giving me lessons told me not to buy one as he could build one so good that an experienced player would pick it up and say "where did you get a Fender this good?" It didn't quite work out that way though.

I've had so much more fun teaching myself because I feel I have a freedom to play what I want and what I feel I need (rather than work step by step up strings or scales). I did start with lessons for about a year but then gave up because I didn't enjoy it and thus my learning was slow. Then I came back a couple of years later when I bought a tab book and discovered tablature. So I guess a couple of lessons wouldn't hurt to get you started, but I find the lone journey afterwards more rewarding and you can skip over parts you may not want or need to learn. For example I can't read music except for rhythms.
I tend to use Youtube if there's any particular techniques I want to learn. For example I checked a couple of videos about pinch harmonics and some bands will sometimes upload online lessons themselves. But I never really bothered with proper lessons ever since (the only one I had recently was a local Groupon voucher my friend gave me, I kinda had to go since it was a gift lol.
If you haven't yet, check out Ultimate Guitar, they're very good if you're looking for tabs of songs.
That's just my approach anyways.
