Anyone ever caught this on Radio 4? Each week they have a celebrity or public figure who chooses the 8 songs they would have to have with them on a desert island, i.e. the 8 songs they couldn't live without. Of course, being Radio 4, this started back in the day when they were talking about wax cylinders and then 78 rpm records, but it still persists (only why you would lug a gramophone onto your island when you could just slip an iPod in yer pocket and have the 20,000 songs you can't live without is beyond me).
Guests are (hypothetically) given a Swiss Army Knife, the Bible and the Complete Works of Shakespeare, and other than that get to choose a book and a luxury item in addition to their songs ....
So, come on folks, get listing those 8 favourite songs!
(p.s. I think we might have to allow an acoustic guitar as an additional "given" item, or it'll get boring)

8 songs are not enough but here are today's 8, all guitar instrumentals:
Tommy Emmanuel: Classical Gas Larry Carlton: Bubble Shuffle Jo Satriani: Always With Me, Always With You Jan Akkerman: Prima Donna Santana: Bella Camel: Rhayader Goes To Town Al Di Meola: Mediterranean Sundance Gordon Giltrap: Fear Of The Dark
You say we get an acoustic guitar. Thank you.
A luxury item? I would like to take my Roland digital piano, although a piano is hardly a luxury; it is one of life's essentials.
Edit: I was right, 8 is impossibly few. I cannot imagine being without these, either:
Jeff Beck: Because We Were Lovers Leo Kottke: Junebug Ry Cooder: I Think It's Going To Work Out Fine Arlen Roth: When A Man Loves A Woman Fleetwood Mac: Albatross The Shadows: Apache Focus: Sylvia Steve Morse: Tumeni Notes Mark Knopfler: Smooching

Been on an eMusic and Amazon mp3 rampage recently and now can't really fit in 8 songs XD, but I'll try:
Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe Explosions In The Sky - Six Days At The Bottom Of The Ocean Ed Harrison - Tin Soldiers Periphery - Letter Experiment Andy Mckee - Nakagawa-San Alexisonfire - It Was Fear Of Myself That Made Me Odd Carbon Based Lifeforms - Init Animals As Leaders - Behaving Badly
Had to mix my guitar and electronic tastes together.
I'd want to say Xbox as the luxury item if that could count.

OK, I'll have a crack at this:
Joni Mitchell - The Boho Dance (from "The Hissing of Summer Lawns") The Blue Nile - Saturday Night (from the album "Hats" 1989 - an incredibly wonderful album, could have picked any of the songs, please listen to it if you haven't before!) Cocteau Twins - Pearly Dewdrops Drops Juliana Hatfield - The Fact Remains (from 2008 album "How To Walk Away") Lush - Breeze (off the "Sweetness and Light" EP, 1990 - must include a bit of shoegaze, is this really over 2 decades old? ) Mozart - Piano Concerto No. 27 in B flat major Bach - Lute Suites, played by Sharon Isbin, classical guitar (impossible to choose a bit of Bach, but I'll go for the guitar option for the forum - actually an incredible bit of guitar playing from Ms Isbin) Wes Montgomery - No Blues (from "Smokin' at the Half Note" - had to put some jazz guitar in.)
That's today's list anyway, tomorrow's might be different, this is just a really impossible exercise!

OK, here's my list (at least for today)
Don’t Stop Me Now – Queen We used to play this over and over again on a Friday night getting ready to go out when I was at University. Everyone had their own bit they used to add, so you could tell who’d gone home for the weekend by which added bits were missing.
Move On Up – Curtiss Mayfield I love the energy of this song and the sentiment, plus I saw a band playing it the night before I bought a beautiful 3-tone sunburst Jap ’62 reissue Strat so I associate it with the joy of buying a new guitar.
Start Me Up – The Rolling Stones I just think this is the best opening riff of any song, ever, by the best rock ‘n’ roll band in the world.
New England – Billy Bragg I love the lyrics and the bravery of the man to record the song with just his vocals and a raw electric guitar with just a bit of room reverb.
Shake a Tailfeather – The Blues Brothers with Ray Charles A song full of energy and a horn sound to die for. I love the opening where it starts with just Ray Charles and the electric piano, and then the whole band kicks in with astonishing power.
Blue Flame – Joe Jackson I think Joe Jackson is one of the most talented songwriters ever and this one just has an achingly beautiful melody coupled with very clever and witty lyrics.
Deeply Dippy – Right Said Fred My guilty pleasure, this one. I just love the horn arrangement on it. I’d play it so loud that any passing ship within a hundred leagues would hear it.
Sweet Child o’ Mine – Guns and Roses For a guy with a silly top hat, I think Slash is one of the most tasteful rock guitarists out there. Everything he plays suits the song and takes it somewhere rather than being just a gratuitous solo or bit of noodling, which is why so many people want Slash to collaborate with them.
My book would be Star of the Sea and my luxury would be a hammock to lay in while I strum the guitar I’ve generously allowed us all.
