Guy's,
sorry if this like flogging a dead horse to you all.
I had a good look around but I can't really find a definitive answer for what I'm looking for which is this.......

Can using different capacitors for your tone circuit or in any other fashion measurably affect the tonality of a guitar?

I have a fender TBX pot and 2 different sets of orange drops on their way to me,a pair of 715p 22uf ( for the humbucker in the bridge of my squier strat) and 47uf rated at 400v and a pair of 225p 47uf rated at either 100v or 200v. I am looking at paper in oil caps as well but was going to wait until I have a better instrument before buying those.
I became aware of this type of upgrade and dived in but now I'm not too sure if there's going to be a any reality to the hype.
Ta

If anyone can tell me the difference between the sprague orange drops and the red drops that would be nice too,I see the red drops sell for significantly less than the orange drops.

In my humble opinion, as a former audio electronics engineer who has designed professional audio circuits used by the BBC, ITV and international broadcasters ... no.

However, there are many people who know better than me. ;\)

I tried to look for a technical site which would answer this question but Google is blocked by Tw*ts selling capacitors telling people that one sounds better than another. From the pictures, they look to use slightly different technologies with the red ones being in a harder plastic coating but available in similar values of capacitance, voltage and current. Neither are electrolytic and I suspect that anyone who says he can tell the difference without a lab test is lying.

Okay. I'm not sure but orange appears to be metalised polyester film and the other is metalised polyproprylene film.

Oh, and did I mention that I agree with Dave. (for similar reasons.)

Are the capacitors among those listed here?

These are all plastic-dielectric capacitors of various types. (SBR Inc. seems to own the Orange Drop trademark, at least in the US.)

If you can identify part numbers, we can compare the capacitors' specs.

EDIT: Looking back at the original post I see that they're types 715P and 225P, both of which are listed.

A quick look at the spec sheets (linked from the page above) reveals that the 225P is a general purpose polyester film capacitor. They'd be perfectly suitable for low level audio applications, including guitar tone controls.

The 715P has a polypropylene dielectric and is aimed at power applications, where there are high currents and impulsive currents. Although they'd also be suitable for low level audio, this isn't their intended application. You wouldn't be making use of their special characteristics (basically that they won't get hot when high currents pass through them).

Having seen capacitors go up in smoke when used in mains applications -- and in one case, cause fire damage when left on overnight -- I would use 715Ps but not 225Ps for that sort of job! But 715Ps would be out of place in a guitar.
