Hi All,

Ive always had Fender Strats but only ever cheap copies ie Squire,Aria etc. Ive decided to have a little treat and want a genuine fender ;\) Now ive only a limited budget of about £600. The way I see it is that I can buy a new Fender Highway or ive been looking at a second hand 97/98 Corona built stuff... I know its down to personal taste and feel but can anyone point me in the right direction? The Highway seems to have good reviews but so do the 90s strats!!

Thanks all

Hi VWandRock, welcome to the forum.

I'd go for a used USA standard model everytime. Excellent as the Highways are, the USA Standards are just that much better (and, incidentally, so are the American Specials). Is there any reason why you're limiting yourself to just '90s strats? I've owned lots of '90s American Standards and 2001-2007 American Series, and, in my view, they're essentially no different at all. On the other hand, the 2008 onwards American Standards are widely reckoned to be the best production models that Fender have ever produced, a view which I tend to agree with. In your place, these are the strats I'd aim for. With a bit of patience, you should be able to pick one up on Ebay for a price within your budget. I recently bought a virtually new 2010 one for £570. There're currently a couple of rather nice ones about to go within the next few hours for what could be within your budget.

--ooops naughty word-- to USA Standards. For me they're a compromise of style over substance. The top level Mexican stuff is WAY better value, and you save £200 or so just by losing that "Made in USA" tag.

Equally, a G&L - particularly a used USA Legacy is a WAY better guitar than anything from Fender outside the Custom Shop

Perhaps it depends if you want one built by Mexicans in Mexico, of Mexicans in California?

ps. New poster on this site so say 'Hello'

My recomnedation would be a classic player - which although put together south of the border utilises a good few US made parts and benefits from custom shop design tweaks (IIRC this includes the paint process as well as physical hardware).

The only limiting factor is they're only available in 2 colours (different ones for 50s and 60s variants).

Of my strats I enjoy my CP60 the most.

go with the highway one if you can! it has a nitro finish jumbo frets and is hss routed. (the atomic humbucker seems to be similar to a jb so some say.)

Which is why the US is rapidly losing its manufacturing capability and why unemployment is rising.

Same thing in the UK. Outsourcing to cheaper countries is the result of burdening industry with excessive laws and regulations, employee rights and taxation.

An electronics company I used to work for in the 1980s now outsources its manufacturing to China; it has to, just to keep up with its competitors. I presume all the local workers who used to assemble and test PCBs are now out of a job.

And since three-quarters of our laws are in fact implementations of EU requirements, a change of UK government would have little effect.

Dave
