I thought it best to put this in here rather than in the general electric guitar section due to this being more of a workshop area ,so here it is.....
If you were thinking of getting yourself a cheapo Les Paul rip-off and upgrading a few bits and pieces where would you start? Are there any particular brands that you know of who use decent wood or necks etc to start with and may be worth further investigation?
Or, who would you say make the best reasonably priced kits.I came close to getting an Explorer kit from GFS in the USA recently but they never seem to have them in stock anymore. They do Les Paul's as well, made from Indonesian or Malaysian Mahogany I believe and therefore could be a fair long term investment.

Burny makes better copies of Gibson Guitars than Gibson makes, so that is one make to consider.

I'll be keeping my eye on e-bay for a second hand one of them for sure. Is that the same as Burns Guitars though? Very similar names.
I see Tokai make a decent LP copy too.
I had a beautiful Epiphone 12-string acoustic many years ago but they appear to be cheap as chips Guitars these days.

Burns and Burny are not related.

To be honest,I think I'm getting a bit carried away with myself. Should probably finish the strat to a decent sounding and playable standard before I go after another project....
Still if I can find a used Burny for a reasonable price.....

Back in the day (showing my age again) Columbus did a Les Paul copy and my mate went and bought a genuine Gibson LP, it was no better than his Columbus one. Don't forget in the UK, back in the 60s and 70s, Guitars where, by todays rates, even more expensive due to import taxes and stuff and wages were way below par.

A late 70's early 80's Antoria would be pretty good but maybe on the higher side of "cheapo," especially the Japanese ones. Hondo made some good copies (and some bad), the Deluxe range would be the ones to look at rather than the plain Hondo or Hondo II, and can be picked up for very little. Depending on budget of course, I'd be tempted to buy a body and neck new and unfinished and fit whatever hardware you like rather than buy a ready made cheapo to do up, but beware it's a slippery slope
