Hey everyone!

Stumbled across the site whilst looking for guitar forums/blogs/help/tips/guidance etc! Ive been playing now for around 6 weeks, on a guitar ive borrowed from my cousin. Its a very cheap Ebay Hudson, which sounds poor, i struggle to play with any consistency and it kills my fingers. However.......i love playing! Despite using the poor guitar it honestly love trying seeing what i can do. At the moment i am learning to play Wonderwall and Good Riddance (Time of Your Life). I thought by focusing on just two songs it saves my poor brain and fingers to much work early on.

I do have a small question though, which i am sure has been answered many, many times before so i am so sorry for asking again. I am looking to purchase my own guitar. Something a little better, set up nicely but i am not sure if i should go for an acoustic or an electric. I did like the look of the Cort Earth Grand, read a lot of good things about it, love the thought of the extra service given by Richard. However, i then saw this which i have instantly fell in love with! A little bit beyond my £200 budget, but for the right guitar i am willing to save a little more and push the budget. Appreciate it is second hand, but i am sure it wouldnt be being sold if it was a duff one!

Any advice would be fantastic! And whilst i ask this question now, i know that i will end up with one of each in the not so distant future!

Advice? Reserve that gorgeous Epiphone Les Paul before someone else does! You cannot beat having an instrument that inspires you.

You might want to visit and play it and a few others, just to make sure.

I can vouch for the quality of Richard's work and attention to detail.

Welcome Andy. I have the same Les Paul and it is a great guitar. Bought mine used, too. Go for it.

The Les Paul had gone, however, that hasnt stopped me purchasing a guitar! so i am a very happy chappy! Ive ordered a Wine Red Cort Z42 and i cant wait for it to come in the new year! Ill finally be able to hand over this terrible Hudson! \:P

I now just need to pick up bits and bats such as stand, tuner, very small amp, leads etc, so any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

The Cort Z42 is a nice guitar. Well chosen!

Of the extras you omitted to mention a spare set of strings and a selection of plectrums. I tend to buy these sorts of things from Strings Direct.

Its gorgeous! I can wait to get my paws on it....and play some songs badly!

I did neglect those! That will be quickly amended! Any recommendation on specific strings?

There will be almost as many personal recommendations for strings as there are makes of string.

I have used Ernie Ball strings for over 20 years without any problems or complaints. D'addario strings might be more popular, especially the XL strings. You won't go wrong with either brand.

I keep coming back to Ernie Ball 9s for most styles of playing. I also use Gibson Brite Wires when I can get them, but they have a very 'soft' feel which is not to everyone's taste. I find d'Addarios very hard by comparison.
Great choice on the Z42.
You want to look at chromatic tuners and preferably an in-line one as it makes re-tuning a lot simpler. Pics are very much personal preference but I use dunlop 1.0 for rock or 0.8 for more laid back stuff.
There's a massive range of quite decent small amps around as long as you keep away from the unknown brands. So, Roland, Orange or Peavey in the sub £100 range. A bit above that would get you a Vox AC4TV which is a valve based amp and has output from 4w down to 1/4w and everyone seems to like them.

Best affordable tuner in the world (IMHO).It's the one I use and can be used for guitar, bass, 12 string, banjo etc, etc. http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electronics,_pickups/Electronic_tuners/Peterson_StroboClip_Tuner.html
