I’m looking for an overdrive pedal to use with my Classic Player 60s Fender Strat and Blues Junior amp. I’m also awaiting receipt of an MXR Dyna Comp to add a bit of squeeze. I want something that gives more of a natural boost/overdrive; as I generally play quite a clean sound for soul, funk etc.
3 possible contenders in my price range:
Digitech Bad Monkey – Aimed at emulating the Tube Screamer I believe? Boss SD-1 Danelectro Transparent Overdrive – I understand Version 1 was pretty good. Not sure about the more recent Version 2.
I’m happy to buy new or second-hand.

My new, revamped pedal board. Basic but all the Boss pedals are Japanese late 80s models.

The Dano is a clone of something else (can't remember what..) but I know guys who love it.
From what I've read, the Dano CTO-1 is a clone of the Timmy/Fulltone OCD pedals. Ive seen some good demos online. The version 2 has different circuitry I believe.
My local store definitely stock Boss, but haven't seen the BM or CTO anywhere.

Version 1 of the Dano CTO is no longer available new. Apparently the V2 is a completely different sound and not as warm. It appears Danelectro had to make changes as the V1 was such a close match to the Paul Cochrane Timmy OD.
Anyone know where I may get hold of the v1? Nothing on Ebay.

Is your price range definitely in the £40 to £50 bracket? If not there's an OCD (definitely V3 or earlier) ending today on Ebay, currently just over £50 but will probably go higher.
If money's not an issue keep a look out for a Providence Stampede - beautiful overdrive (IMO).
Richard.

A friend of mine not so long ago bought a few overdrive pedals - we were testing them to see what we thought. I can't remember all of them (there were several Boss ones) but I do remember that most of them seemed too "fizzy" - too much "hair" on the sound if that makes any sense. But one I did like was the yellow Boss SD1 Super Overdrive, as seen on Oldjono's pedal board above. It seemed smooth and musical to me, and also nice and controlled, certainly not an OTT metal pedal.
This chap on YouTube seems to like an inexpensive Behringer overdrive pedal, and I've heard that some of their range are well worth looking at. Behringer TO800 .
Personally, I have a Tokai "Metaldriver" which I bought in the early '80's - despite the name which is very mis-leading, I find it really excellent and versatile too. I understand it has the same chip in it used in the Ibanez TS808 tubescreamer pedal. Probably a bit hard to get hold of now though... Tokai TMD1 Metaldriver pedal but if you see one going cheap, I'd seriously recommend it!

My budget isnt definitely £40-£50. It was a starting point really. I don't use overdrive much with my band, so I was looking at the cheaper options. I had heard really good things about the Dano CTO version 1 being very close to much more expensive pedals.
Realistically I could look to around £100 at a real push. Like I say, for something that may not get used loads, I'm maybe a little reluctant to pay a high price.
