Hi all, I've called the post, 'replacing bridge', so I hope the bit I am asking about is called that ! The strings start at and go over the bridge, yes ?
I have a handmade guitar which looked okay to me and plays soundly enough. When I showed it to a guy at a guitar shop he said the bridge was the cheapest bit of kit you could buy. I would like to replace the bridge now, so is it a straight forward job ?

Hi and welcome to the forum! Can I ask what type of guitar it is? If you are able, a picture of the bridge area would be helpful too. It's a bit impossible to say on this without more information really \:\)

You need to get it stored on the web somewhere i.e. so that it has a URL address. Then click the 3rd button from the left in the panel above the text box on the reply screen, and paste in the URL address for the image. I use UKImageHost to do this - if you have the image on your computer, go to the UKImageHost website, click the chose file button - you should be able to browse your computer memory and select the image - then click "upload image" on UKImageHost - your image should appear, right click on it, then select "copy image URL"... Still with me? then when posting on the forum, as I say, 3rd button from the left above the reply screen (you need the full reply screen, not the quick reply one), paste in the URL address for the image into the box and click on OK - that should do it.

EDIT: Oh yes, and you may need to re-size the image before uploading it with UKImageHost, or it may be a bit on the huge size!

Sorry your having trouble, this sort of thing can be a bit of a pain I know... That's just the way I do it, you might be able to find another way that works. \:\)

1. Is it malfuntioning?
2. Does you guitar stay in tune?
3. Could you live with it as is?
4. Three yes' = do nothing.Unless you really want to.

It looks fine to me. You should see the stock bridge on my Epiphone. It's 21 years old, looks like it's been in a rusty toolbox for a while and yet it works perfectly.

Cheers gazania - at least I am able to see the bridge from that link - to be honest it doesn't look too bad to me, it's a simple design, but in some ways I think that's a good thing - I don't like bridges that are very heavily built. And the quality looks OK from what I can see, to be honest.

I guess you could replace it, but you might have to do quite a bit of graft to make the job work - you would need to get a new bridge unit with the same string spacing (they are not all the same) and then there is the issue of the holes for the fixing screws - these will almost certainly be in a different place to the fixing holes/screws on the existing bridge. So you've got to fill the old holes neatly, probably by drilling them out and filling with hardwood dowel, then drill new fixing holes for the new bridge.

But if I'm honest, I'd leave it well alone - if it functions and sound alright, then it is alright! From experience, people in music shops sometimes do not give very good advice, and I think this might be an example!
