Hello and good evening,
I'm fairly new to this and I've just got my first semi decent electric guitar:

The thing is, I'm confused over the temperature/humidity issue. I've heard it's a bigger deal for acoustics but should still apply somewhat to my guitar I guess. Is it just a case of keeping the temperature and humidity constant, or within a particular range? Or is temperature less of an issue and humidity the main thing I want to be keeping an eye on. If someone could clear this up for me, it would be greatly appreciated. I mean, it's winter, these things are going to change constantly and I'm really paranoid I'm going to knacker up my new baby by not following some simple rule. I have a decent hard case that I'm keeping it in but does that help it climatise any better?
Thanks guys,
Jim.

I look forward to some knowledgable replies on this one too. I've always assumed that a guitar can handle a wide range of temperatures so long as it's fairly constant, I mean it's ok cold and ok in the warm just so long as it doesn't have to go from one to the other too quickly or too often. I could easily be wrong. Most of my Guitars live in a reasonably insulated workshop/shed with a small radiator to stop it dropping too low at night and I keep them in gigbags each with a sachet of silica to avoid condensation. I hope I'm doing the right thing.

It's hard to know for sure isn't it? I'm going to have to put mine in my room at the top of the house and it gets really cold in here and then when I come in from work I switch on the heater so the room goes up from 10 to 18 degrees in about 30-35 minutes I guess. I've no idea if this okay or what kind of humidity issues it causes....

In my younger days Guitars stored overnight in vans while on tour appeared to be OK - they were in hard cases.
I suspect you are worrying unnecessarily. 1. Don't put it anywhere near a radiator, 2. Don't leave it any where below Freezing and 3. Don't leave it in the bathroom. Other than that in a normal domestic situation it will be just fine.

If you keep your guitar some place you would be comfortable yourself you will have no problems. We do not have such extremes of temperatures in the UK, other than artificially created ones, that would damage a guitar. If you store it beside the Aga then that is a different matter. Humidity can be a huge problem in places like Canada and Australia where the extreme cold and heat can reduce relative humidity to such an extent that Guitars, particularly acoustic Guitars, dry out. My guitar, kept in my office overnight, regularly gets a cold cycle as there is no overnight heating. However by the time I pick it up at lunch time it is not even out of tune. So, a guitar kept in the corner of the lounge or in the spare bedroom is not going to suffer any ill effects, here in the UK.

Excellent, that's great, thanks for the reassurance
Is it better to keep it on a stand or in its hard case? I have a hard case but then I'm worried about taking it out of the case and into a different climate, although I guess it's only going to be a little different isn't it.....I'm being a paranoid lunatic aren't I?

Right, in summary:
Just be sensible - don't let it go below freezing or above inferno in my room. If it is super cold, let the guitar warm up slowly. Don't strap it to a radiator. Just use my common sense.
Thanks a lot guys - you've put my mind at rest.
