Thanks dfgkdh for your understanding. \:\)

Agreed Lester - as well as the acoustic route the semi-hollow (preferably with a solid central block in the body) is a good option. For all blues - and a wide variety of other genres too. I've done a lot of my blues learning this last three years on a Hagstrom Viking Deluxe (second hand) and it's been a great one to use even for acoustic guitar based lessons. I find the semi-hollw a much easier guitar to play and I enjoy the wide range of sounds I can get from it.

Yes Megi - you've spotted an obsession. Three years ago I wasn't really aware / appreciative of blues at all, though I'd dabbled in the blues rock side of things. It all changed when my better half took some interest in the real blues genre and I suddenly found it made sense to me after all thse years - been trying to make up for lost time ever since.

I think I will buy an acoustic guitar first and then once I've learned some blues stuff on that I would consider getting a good electric guitar for blues?:) I don't mind saving up at all but I'm too young to get a job so I think £450 should be the most I'll spend on a guitar at the moment. So you think the Rose Morris one would be best for this or should I wait longer until I can buy a more expensive one that's better?
Also just out of curiosity, someone linked to this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Martin-Smith-R...=300089372723&a what are they? Sorry for asking so many questions hehe.:s

Resonator Guitars - acoustic guitar but sound is produced by metal cones rather than a wooden soundboard as in the usual acoustic guitar.

Tend to be louder and do have a distinctive different sound. Some have square necks as they're designed to be played more like pedal steel Guitars - others have conventional round neck shape. Bodies often made of wood, but may be metal or other materials. Often used in open tuning and higher action for slide guitar.
Rory Gallagher Resonator

Bukka (or Booker) White and Son House are two of the old blues school I can recall used resonators.
Mark Knopfler Booker Whites Resonator

A good decision.

Are you sure? Three days ago you wanted to spend up to £100. It's your money, so I am just checking.

From your previous comment that you had been in the Rose Morris shop, I thought it would be local enough for you to go and try their affordable acoustic guitar, which according to the specifications, doesn't seem too bad. I have no idea how it sounds in real life or whether it sounds pleasing to you.

I have just had a rummage around Guitars.co.uk to see what is going secondhand. Here are two suggestions for you to think about:

1) For £135 there is a Garrison acoustic guitar (I have not heard of this make) with a ton of extras that would help you out.

2) For £250 there is a Faith Mercury acoustic guitar. The description is limited and there is no photo ... but (a) I have a Faith (12 string - see my avatar) and so know how nice Faith Guitars are, (b) it is smaller than the Garrison and should be both easier to play and sound nicer (in my opinion) and (c) Richards Guitars sells this guitar for £485 new, so you could get an almost £500 guitar for half that.

These are not the only two Guitars for sale - by all means search for yourself!

Whilst I and the other forummers can make suggestions - and I hope they will help you by confirming or criticising my suggestions - you should ideally get to play them to see which one you prefer. I appreciate that may not be possible.

What would I do? I would go for the Faith, a better guitar and better value, and get Richard (the chap who runs the forum) do a proper setup for you. That will cost you £55. You can always have this done at a later date but it would be worthwhile. Richard will send it to you for £15 and so maybe he can arrange to have it collected from the seller for £15.

Don't be. I think those of us who have been playing a long time have more experience and can help you avoid mistakes.

FWIW I think Lester is offering good balanced advice. I like the sound of the Faith Mercury too - all solid woods for that sort of money, plus Faith are known to have very good quality control - and at a sensible price point for a "not too cheap, not too expensive" first buy, it can't be bad. If I was able I would still want to travel to the buyer to collect it, so I could check there was nothing wrong, but i might well take the risk if not.

There is no right or wrong, but I think an acoustic is a good first guitar though, as long as it has good playability - beware that some of the less expensive ones come with high actions that are hard or impossible to correct - you really don't want to be trying to learn on such an instrument. Maybe later on when you have learnt more about different guitar types and sounds, you might be in a better position to think about going electric!

Yeah, thanks, I'm sure.:) I was just being impatient really and wanting a guitar fast but I thought about it and I think that's silly so I'll save up and wait for one, definitely a better idea. Thank you both so much for your advice!:)

That's a resonator guitar, they were an early attempt to make Guitars a bit louder in the days before electric Guitars, and were used, as someone already said by many blues artists. I've never played a Martin Smith one so I cant say how good or bad it might be.
