Anyone got any tips for a moron?

I'm really struggling, almost to the point of desperation!

I'm ok with 1+2+3+4+, but when it comes to remembering which strokes to play and which not, I'm all at sea.

Apart from listening to the track and practising till my fingers bleed does anyone have any secrets to unlock the rhythm that must be hiding somewhere very deep inside me?

Any tips gratefully received.

Graham

Hi Graham,
I found it impossible to miss a beat – is that what you mean?
I just played nothing but Down Down Miss up-Down-up for a whole week in every free moment I had. Play it slow and say it out loud and do a proper full stroke on the Miss but, obviously, miss the strings.
Hope this helps, once you have one pattern down they do get easier I promise.

As I said somewhere else in here, stick on a CD, damp the strings with your fretting hand and strum along to the music with your pick hand. Once you get used to the different rhythms you will find playing the combination you want so much easier.

As you say, the answer is practice. Sadly, there aren't many shortcuts when learning an instrument- you have to train your brain and build up the muscle memory and that can only be done through repeated action.

A few beers then "let the force be with you" makes for a great guitar session!
Remember. Always drink sensibly !!!!

Ah beer!

Not tried that approach although I'm thinking that over the next days it may be unavoidable.

I'm working on REM's “ losing my religion" and initially it was ghosting those two sets of up-down that was causing the problem.

More practice today and at times I'd got it, even managing to keep the rhythm whilst talking to my son and watching something on his laptop.

I'm thinking that's progress.

Once again thanks for the advice boys

Graham

It takes me all my time to play and breath! When I get to a difficult bit I am like a Cheetah. I take a deep breath and hope to get through it before I need another.
