I agree with what Richard says here. I do my own setups and it's the first thing I do when I buy a guitar. A nicely set up guitar can make the difference between enjoying your foray into guitar or giving it up as a bad job.
My first guitar was rubbish. How I persevered I do not know. I even knew it was rubbish back then especially when my brother got one to learn on which was 10 times better.

Hi all, newbie organgrinder here. So impressed by the friendliness and response of this community. Just to put a couple of points right this end, the dealer does sell used but was steering me away from Ebay because you can't try before you buy. And he only had three new Guitars left, at £99, £169 and £469, which a cynic may say is possibly why he recommended buying a first guitar at the cheaper end. I am going back to all 3 shops again, with 'playability' and sound' as my main factors within two price ranges - under £300 and under £500 - and try to get a hard case thrown in, I am almost certain that as an inexperienced buyer I will probably get better value for money than hoping to snap up a bargain for under £100. Thanks everyone and I still welcome your views. I live in Tyne and Wear.

Put that in your profile: My Stuff (in the blue menu bar near the top of the page) > My Profile > under Geographic Location: (State, Country, etc.) and then Submit (at the bottom of the page).

Hi - newbie here.

Just wanted to say that I have recently bought a Yamaha FG730S and am blown away by the quality of the thing. Proper carved top and lovely fit and finish as you would expect from Yamaha.

The only change I have made is to lower the action slightly to make it suit my playing a bit more (am used to electrics - this is my first acoustic)

It cost me £280.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Will

I have one of these, got it for around £120
Needed a setup, and maybe I'll replace the nut soon, but, a nice guitar with case and 2 different pickups. I put 10's on it and it plays almost as easily as an electric.
