Do we have a fellow astronomer here.
I have been at this for the best part of 40 years.

I'm afraid I couldn't call myself an astronomer Graham, just an enthusiast for things to do with planets, stars, space etc. I keep finding myself browsing on the Nasa website, also looking at some of the Wiki pages on planets and moons. I'm a sucker for any kind of space or science themed program on TV too. Maybe I'll have to join the local astronomy society though, it does have an appeal for me. It sometimes seems to me that most of us live in a bubble here on Earth, and don't have much awareness of all this amazing stuff in the Universe - it's good to see things from a bigger perspective sometimes.

With what you have said, you are half way there. The interest is there, just a little push and you will be there.

Have you ever got out of your car at night and stood a looked at the shy, and asked yourself the question, what if?????.

It is very big, and the sights our just hard to explain, i can sit at my scopes, wether it be through the eye piece or at the monitor and be never board.
You need to try, you will be amazed.

Yes, I do find myself looking at the sky quite often (though the local street lights don't help), not with a very educated eye I admit. I have a small spotting scope (used for a different hobby) through which I was recently able to look at Jupiter - I could see the disc of the planet, plus the 4 main moons, to my surprise.

But thank you for the encouragement - OK, I will have a go at getting into astronomy! I know little about telescopes and the associated gear, and just about nothing regarding computers and how they are used. I'm thinking joining the local society would be a good first step into this world?

Have you ever pointed your little scope at the moon, that is 'take your breath away'.

Start at some forums, as with this one they can be very helpfull, we all start somewhere.

If your were local i would ask if you would like a night at the scope.

Sadly the scope is broken at the moment - I normally use it for archery, and it fell over in some high wind (should have had it pegged down!) - may be able to fix it, if not I'll need a new one. But strangely, no I haven't got round to looking at the moon!

Forums is a great idea, cheers for that, I don't know why I didn't think of that either. A night at the scope sounds wonderful, unfortunately I'm in Grimsby, N.E. Lincolnshire, which is not at all local to Wiltshire. I'll let you know how I get on in the coming weeks though.

You can subscribe to the Nasa website and they'll send you e-mails daily and weekly with updates and pics etc.
There's a link on their website to the Mars Rover which I found to be astonishing, you can track the journey it's made on the surface of Mars.

Cheers for that idea Ape, I will indeed register at the Nasa site. I've looked at the Mars Rover stuff too - it is incredible I agree. I've been following happenings around Saturn as well with the Cassini probe, some pretty amazing images coming from that one too.
