Hello Guys/gals,

I'm looking for an upgrade to my son's Crafter.

The current shortlist is Martin, Taylor, Gibson and the budget around £1500.

I'd consider 2nd hand with provenance and wonder what opinions you have about what I'm proposing. I don't know anything about pickup's but when he does open mic, it's always amplified.

He plays blues, folk, and acoustic pop.

We live in B31 if anyone's local has a potential instrument.

Thank you very much,

John

Hi, and welcome to the forum as well! I think you should be able to get something pretty impressive for that kind of money. I'm not an expert on acoustic or electro-acoustic Guitars myself, but we did recently have this thread on the forum: Acoustics up to £2000 - the guitar buyer tried quite a lot of potential Guitars in his quest for the best one (for him of course). In the end he found a second-hand Brook (British handmade), but he is also very complimentary about Stonebridge Guitars, so I think you should add that brand to your list of possibilities - I've not heard anything but high praise for Stonebridge myself. Richard's Guitars (Richard also founded this forum) sell these by the way, if that's not too far to travel.

Thank you Graham, for your prompt and friendly reply.

My son's no expert but his guitar is central to his life and replaces the circle of friends most people have (he's autistic), so I just want to help him with the right instrument.

The advice from the thread you pointed me to is to go and try and that sounds like good advice to me.

Once again, my thanks to you.

John

No problem John, happy if we can help in any way. Trying lots of Guitars can only be a good thing - the more knowledge you have of all the brands (and there is a surprising amount of variation) the better really. There will probably be some of the others along before long to add their views, but do let us know how you get on.

Any views on a Gibson Songwriter Studio (not the Standard).

Last night at our open mic there were two players with Taylor 714ce's and they sounded terrific - i wondered how the Gibson may compare?

Would it be as bright?

I've not been impressed by some things I've read about newer Gibsons recently - I've heard a few horror stories on this forum and elsewhere regarding defects that really should not be found on Guitars at these prices. Although these complaints have been in regard to electric and jazz archtop type Guitars, not acoustics. Also I have to admit I've come across other people who are very happy with their Gibsons. I do wonder though, it there is a tendency with Gibson where you are to some extent paying for the name, and that they sometimes allow standards to slip (I wonder that about Martin and even Taylor as well though!). I think that sometimes less established makers of high quality instruments give more for your money - they have to, because they don't yet have the "name effect" in their favour. These are just my personal views!

I found a chap on YouTube reviewing a Songwriter Studio, and it does look like a nice guitar - good for strumming with a big full sound I would think. I've always liked ebony fretboards too, which it has. Personally I would go for a slightly smaller body-size for an acoustic - I'm not that keen on the dreadnought style - I think they are often a bit bass-heavy, but that's down to my personal taste in Guitars as well. So it could be great! you just have to try it alongside a few others to have some idea I guess.

Where has everybody else on the forum got to? Somebody please! \:\)

Hi John,
A friend of mine was talking to me recently about a Gibson J-200 that he bought for himself in the early 1970's.
I have to say that is a magnificent sounding guitar if quite expensive these days .
For me the best part of choosing a quality instrument lies in finding it,going to different shops or homes or wherever the search takes you and meeting all the different characters that you tend to bump into but I think if you take you time and take your son,I'm sorry I don't know his name,to try as many different instruments as is possible for you then you should find a decent guitar at the end of the day and I'm sure your son will let you know when 'the one' he wants is in his hands.

Hi John, welcome to the forum.

The 3 brands you have shortlisted are of course market leaders in the field, but I would be a bit chary of the Gibsons. There are excellent Gibson acoustics around, but they tend to be very inconsistent, so, unless you are able to try out lots to find one that speaks to you, I would steer clear of them.

New Martins at your budget level are, in my opinion, somewhat underwhelming, and you can find many better Guitars at that price. Having said that, if you can find a good second-hand J40 or HD28, I would certainly consider those.

As others have said, try as many Guitars as you possibly can, and keep an open mind about other makes. Another factor to consider, as Megi rightly suggests, is the body shape. Rather than just sticking to dreadnaughts, also try the jumbos, OMs, 000s, etc., as you might find one of these much more suited to your son's style and type of music played, or just be more comfortable to play. One particular guitar you should definitely seek out and try is the Stonebridge GS23CR, which very many people rave about.

Hi John. That's a delightful task to have. As has been said before on here, do check out the recent page on quality Guitars for under £2000. Many of the suggestions will fall within your price, too.
I'd certainly look at Stonebridge and Moon. My own favourite would be to perhaps budget a little more and include Fylde in the hotlist as another British hand-made option (along with Moon). You can speak to the luthiers and get their advice about pick-up as well.

Happy hunting.

Brian

Re Gibsons- I would generally not buy one blind, except from Hartnoll Guitars. The guys there are top-notch and won't send one out unless it's a really good one with no issues. Not something that you should have to worry about when spending this kind of money, but they're the guys I'd trust above all others.

As for how it would sound relative to a Taylor, I don't know. What I do know is that any onboard electronics in a Taylor are likely to be better than those in Gibsons, though personally I'd prefer a full-blown acoustic, then add pickups and preamps as you need. It'll give you far more flexibility, and most importantly allow you to get the guitar you want regardless of being stuck with the electronics specified by the manufacturer
