Many many thanks for your replies.
I can now say that we spend a morning at PMT Birmingham, well looked after, with seats and coffee and my son tried a Gibson L200, a Martin D28, a Taylor 714CE and a Taylor 814CE.
Not being aware of prices and model numbers he picked the Taylor 814CE and while we got small discount it was way over the original budget at £2550.
However, it really is fabulous and the Expression system is as good as reported.
One very happy son.
Once again, thank you and Happy New Year.
John

Thank you G.
In fact there are 2 714CE's at the open mic we go to that he'd heard and we initially looked at those.
However, back to back the 814Ce just sounded better and I felt, worth the c£200 more.
He doesn't really understand prices and specs but he did love it so that was that.
How many posts before I can post a picture of him enjoying himself?

I don't know if this will work but here goes: If it does, here's my boy trying a 714CE at PMT Birmingham and the one we bought is to the left of the black guitar above his head.

Sorry John, I somehow missed your last post with the picture. He looks pretty absorbed with that 714CE! But I still think he was right to go for the 814 - from the Taylor website I see that the 714 has cedar for the top, but the 814 has spruce - the spruce would give more of a sparkling high end to the sound, a bit more definition as well. Plus I do like the fancier inlays on the 814! Both stunning Guitars of course, hope he's getting on well with his new guitar.

Hi, I,m new to the forum also but would like you to be a bit wary of Gibsons. I think they have serious problems with quality control and are overpriced. I hope not to offend any Gibson lovers as I know there are some beautiful examples. I would look at any used Lowden, Breedlove, Taylor or Martin guitar. If buying new then some of the Yamahas are superb at this price range and there is also a full carbon guitar made by Rainsong which is quite controversial..some traditionalists dont like it, but the beautiful sound it makes cannot be denied. If the guitar your son falls for doesnt have electrics they are easy to install after purchase..Fishman rare earth are very popular.
