... last week I made it through the first audition for an unpaid job as a bass player in a bluegrass band and now I have 24 of the band's songs to learn in time for a second audition some time early in the new year.

Bass player? I always thought of you as a guitar player. If that's the case, would you not find it just a little bit frustrating? I once did a tour as a drummer, and hated it because all the time I wanted to be up front with a guitar in my hands.

Learn bass for 24 bluegrass songs. That should take you 10 minutes then.
Only joking (a bit). I always fancied playing bass in a Country and Western band. Nearest I got to that was covering a few Eagles numbers back in my bass playing days.

Would that be double-bass?

Bluegrass bass isn't too difficult, though I say that as someone who's never actually played bluegrass -- I was asked to once, but declined.

The other string players -- banjo, fiddle, mandolin -- do most of the work, while the bass essentially thumps out the tempo. You could do harmony vocals too, as the bass will become automatic fairly quickly.

Basically the bass line is two-to-the-bar, on beats 1 (root) and 3 (fifth), while the banjo plays twiddly stuff eight-to-the-bar. The song structures and chord progressions are pretty unchallenging.

The main thing should be getting your head around the songs, best done by making a compilation playlist and playing it over and over.

Good luck, let us know how you get on!

Dave

You're right, I am primarily a guitar player. I see this foremost as an opportunity to get back into playing live on a regular basis.

I think it is unpaid because they play mostly prisons and drug rehabilitation centres. I can look elsewhere for paid work. The first audition was meant to be a chance to meet the band to see if we click as people. Because they came to my studio there were enough people and instruments for it to become an impromptu jam-along to their songs, with me on the bass.

Lots of great advice Dave, mostly what I was thinking. I am trying to imitate a double bass in sound and style as best a fretted electric bass can. I think harmonies will be part of the job.

Congratulations on the new job, stickyfiddle. What instrument and what sort music will you be playing?

I'll be sharing guitar parts with another guitarist, plus vocal harmonies here and there. Musically it's all covers- very much intended to be fun thing for Friday & Saturday nights that'll earn a little extra pocket money \:\)
