If you check the PRS section of this forum you will see that somhairle has a 2009 PRS Custom 24 and I have a 1991 Custom 24. Somhairle says:

I think you will find that 100% of the PRS owners over on the PRS forum would agree, me included.

PRS appears to be way ahead of Fender and Gibson for consistent build quality. The sound of a PRS is very adaptable, with a range of pickup options and usually humbuckers have coil taps. The only downside is that they don't come cheap - but I decided that when I buy a guitar I am thinking of its sound and playability, not its resale value. The SE range, which is made in Korea, has an excellent reputation and may be better value for money.

Which model is it that you have become ineterested in? Which, if any, have you played?

Hi Lester,
I didn't think to check in the manufacturers area though I was looking in there the other day.
I'm looking at a SE 245 or a custom 24 maybe,
http://www.imuso.co.uk/Electric-Guitars/Manufacturer-Order/PRS-Electric-Guitars

prices appear reasonable for a mahogany bodied instrument

Morning there. I was on this very step a little while ago, yes and for the 245,
after many hours and pages of web, i in the end did not buy.
The more i read on the mik, the more i turned away from them.
Not to say i would not want one, the Mc carthy the one i would like.

I got the MIA Strat in stead.

Happy New Year Ape and everyone. \:\) Hadn't intended to be up at after 2 in the morning, but the neighbours music is too audible to let me drop off to sleep.

My only experience of PRS is a PRS SE Soapbar I got last year (nearly said this year by mistake there!). Korean made - just £350 - they were a discontinued line when I got it and were at a damn good price - still one or two about on line maybe. There had been issues with Gibson not liking the design - possibly why discontinued.
PRS SE Soapbar

The most obvious plus point was the build quality - every bit up there with the quality of a Gibson SG Standard I had a few years back. All the finish and the hardware on the PRS is fault free and blemish free - even the electrics are beautifully neat and tidy. Nicely balanced on the strap - very comfortable neck and overall a very easy guitar to play and very responsive to the player.

The PRS description was "The SE Soapbar is a solid mahogany, single-cutaway guitar with a 22-fret, wide-fat mahogany neck and two soapbar pickups. The mahogany construction and fat neck accentuate the midrange while the soapbar pickups give you bright sparkling highs".

The only part of that description I'd take issue with was "the soapbar pickups give you bright sparkling highs". For my ears the high output P90s as stock (why are all the manufacturers shoving high output pups at us!) were not bright or sparkling - they were coloured and muddy. Still a pair of vintage style Tonerider Alnico II P90s sorted that out. Now sparkling sounds across the range and much improved sustain.

The only other "issue" I had with it - all PRS SE Guitars come with 9s as standard strings, which seems a bit odd given the Gibson scale length and that all the similar higher spec non-SE Guitars have 10s. Changing to 10s helped the sound a lot - bit weedy with the 9s to my ears. Did need a wee bit of nut filing to seat 10s properly though.

It has become my guitar of choice - if I'm not thinking I'll always pick it up first before any of the others - great for blues, jazzy or for the more melodic rock stuff.

This is it being bluesy (well as bluesy as I can do it!). There's a bit of quality issue with the backing track sounds in the second half of the recording, but this is the best I've got the PRS to sing on a recording so far.

Morning all and Happy New year again, woop woop etc,

old but not out,
The more i read on the mik, the more i turned away from them.

Can you enlarge on what you mean there please?

Mark P,
I have indeed just found some Soapbars selling for around the £350 mark and I'm aware of your dedication to the instrument and therefore your review carries serious weight in my mind so thank you for that.
One thing with the wrap around tailpieces though, that style of tailpiece must make it a very involved job to set the intonation up on these Guitars or do they hold tune and intonation etc very well?

I love that site you're using to post your tunes on btw.

There's a used SE245 that I've just become aware of through a friend of mine that I'm going to have a look at as soon as I can get hold of the guy selling it,it looks likely that it may go for around 300 quid so.....worth further investigation at the least.

It frurstrates me that people consider SE models to be "PRS". These Guitars simply devalue the range. They are no more than box standard far eastern Guitars - with a badge - which you then pay a premium for because of the badge.

I am all for paying for quality but not MARKETING HYPE.

Hand on heart the two "brands" are totally different products. One day a a serious brand name will have the guts NOT to sell out to mass production to pay their bills.

Thanks Richard,

I've just been to try the SE 245 which I was quite impressed with as an instrument in it's own right but, interestingly, the guy had an American PRS ( forgotten what model he said it was but it was a double cut-away with the tremolo) there which he let me try as well and that was a superior guitar no questions . Then again it's 4 times the price of the SE model so you'd expect as much really.
It's a difficult call for me as I really haven't played many decent Guitars at all in the last few years

I totally agree, you have nailed it in one.

i do not know what it is that turns me away from the SE's. There is something nagging away at me, the more i read the less they become.
As said above, Richard has nailed it.

You do not buy a car and then pretend it is another model. No i am not being a snob, the real deal is the real deal.

ref,SE, as you read there are snippets in the write ups that keep reminding you this is not the PRS that you want to buy, and words like this is a stripped down versions.
When i read comments like that i start to read less. Call me a snob if you want but thats me.
All ways buy the best you can, if not save a little longer, its worth it in the end.
