Any of you guys right into PC's. I am thinking of building myself a new Desktop PC, mainly to use for my photography, a bit of recording and internet.
I was quite into PC's at one time but my current Desktop is 12 years old and my computer knowledge is as far behind current technology.
I don't want a gaming machine. Just a reliable machine a bit speedier than the one I have. I started looking at parts but found I could buy one ready built for not a lot more.
Advice please..........

I did the same a few years ago and it went well. But last year I came to the same conclusion- i got a good deal on a cheap laptop for barely more than the cost of building a desktop machine.

I built an intel i5 machine last may and saved a few quid over what I would have paid in a shop.
I had the most up to date specs at the time but I think the cog has clicked forwards since then to 2011 motherboards now though I believe they still use the same 1155/1156 chipsets

I used to build all our PCs, but I switched over to buying them. Even my current DAW is an off-the-shelf HP Pavilion. General purpose desktop PCs are so cheap nowadays, and the specs are perfectly adequate for most purposes. (I don't like laptops, too small!)

I will go with all above, i to did all my own building of our PCs, off the shelf is easier today.

I only just bought another for controling my telescopes, for what i got second hand of a top spec, i could not even get close too with my own build.

The parts are so ready of the shelf that you can change what ever is not up to what you want.

Though I shall probably change again with shop bought, I find it really annoying how all the big shop offers come pre-loaded with masses of junk I don’t want and/or would never use. If you ask for an unloaded machine with all the stuff on discs to load yourself, they can’t oblige?

I refuse to do cutting edge technology while they are allowed to sell stuff that is NOT fully tested and you discover afterwards only about 10% of the programmes you use/will use, are compatible or support the new ‘super’ system. I have to pay and give up part of my life to be a guinea-pig?

Question, what’s faster/more powerful – the new Intel chips or the old duel processors?

Give me a list of the specs you want for the machine and I'll see how much I could put it together for

Spec I was looking at was basically the same as the hp Pavilion, but sourcing the parts from Novatech was going to cost me about 40% more. May just get the hp.

I almost bought a Pavilion PC myself but then I noticed that for the same money I could build my own PC with a newer processor and motherboard.
I built one that uses a second generation Intel i5 processor and the one I could have bought in the shops was using a first gen chip.
There's only a slight difference in performance between the 2 chips if you look at it one way or if you look at it another way there IS a performance difference. I looked at it the second way.

But that's at least half the problem, knowing what specs you want.

If on the other hand you pick a PC from a reputable manufacturer, it mostly comes down to picking a price point you're happy with. Oh, and in my case, making sure there's nothing wireless, as I regard wireless keyboards, mice and network connections as a waste of electromagnetic spectrum space. Give me wires any day. I'm funny that way. ;\)

My view was that any PC I bought for my DAW was likely to be far more powerful than the one I was already using (3 yrs old), and would therefore run the same software without any problems. Which it does, and is much quieter.
