Because I have a collection of 13 Guitars, my grandsons another 9 between them and my brother a further 4 more, I have started a note book in which I am keeping details of each guitar, as I do work on it.
The sort of info I intend keeping is Truss Rod tool size (see Adam Black Scorpio SSR), fret height, curvature of neck and possibly even what strings fitted and when. This way, once I have made a measurement I will have it to hand.
At present I cut the front off each packet of strings I use and write the date and instrument on it. This I keep in my string box. For Guitars I don't own I write the date on the string packet and pass it on to my "customer".
Having that to hand is quite useful. That is useful, spelt, A - N - A - L.

It's the sort of thing I would do (thank you very much for putting the idea in my head ). Have you considered doing a computerised version for the ultimate guitar nerd effect? You could have a database, with picture of each guitar, full service/mod history for each one, and list of specs, all cross-referenced of course. Hours of fun!

Not exactly "rock n roll" though...

Love it...

One could go further and write down things like amp settings at venues. Followed by pedal settings at the same. This could grow into much necessary tedium. Plectrum thickness's for example.

It is supposed that Eric Johnson can tell what battery is in a particular pedal. He could become honorary president.

Me too. I don't feel anal, just organised.

Oh Graham. Why do you lead me in wicked ways. A computerised database sounds just the job. And with photographs. Oooooooo. I think I will go and have a cold shower.

See, now I thought I was geeky 'cos I keep spreadsheets detailing my exploits at my PC football manager game!

There's something about the phrase 'string box' that sounds simultaneously geeky and exotic. I shall have to acquire one, and start another spreadsheet...

(By the way, I have CDO. It's just like OCD, but the letters are all in the right order, just like they should be).

I should probably do something like this to keep track of all the slightly unfinished projects. I tend to rush into stringing them up to play them with various little jobs left waiting to be done at the next string-change.

Actually, for all the joking, it IS a good idea - I said it wasn't very rock n roll, but I bet for every "too cool for school" successful rock guitarist out there, there is a guitar tech guy who does look after all this kind of stuff. Also I'm really into Eric Johnson's stuff lately, and besides being an amazing guitarist, he is a complete nerd about gear and setup - and the results show.

Yep, a good relational database (I like MS Access but I'm weird) will help you assemble all sorts of info on any number of Guitars. How much more valuable is it, if you buy a used car and get a full service history? So why not with Guitars, amps, pedals, gigs, settings et al?
No doubt there's a suitable app written for Android or iPhone that would do the job. In fact, now that my old head is going in that direction, what about adding such a thing to the database of your favourite guitar forum? Richard?
