It can't . I've come to the conclusion that people get so overly excited about Guitars that they can rationalise spending any amount of money on them or on vintage items etc.
If you were doing a provable restoration of an early strat and needed goods with provenance to complete it then spending money could be acceptable as you could expect a similar return on the investment....maybe
£1,000 in the shops today could buy you an american strat or,if we go down the same route as you G,a self built strat and tele probably of at least twice the quality of the single shop bought instrument

Of course your right A, it's just madness isn't it? Pickups seem in particular to attract this sort of bizarre mojo stuff where people think there is something you can't get from anything other than a true vintage pickup. But (and I know there is a bit more to it than this, but still...) all a pickup is is some magnets with thin copper wire wound round them.
I guess if you have a 1957 strat missing one pickup, then maybe the cost of this could be justified in investment terms (the guitar might be worth 15 grand or more in original condition). But not justified in terms of the sound produced surely? Its a crazy world...

I was way out with my price estimate for a '57 strat BTW... 57 strat on ebay , puts it in context I suppose!
This can't be right. Some of us think we done well if we get a good strat and case and a few throw inns, for a 1000

It's all mojo with Guitars though isn't it? Sexy rock'n'roll stuff ,there's no price not worth paying to get the magic!
........
apart from maybe being sat down with an actual guitar in your hands for hours on end and pushing yourself to understand the hard bits that you get stuck on and still keeping going even after you've just heard some new guy who makes you want to hide your guitar and all the rest of that
