Just looking at my options in the world of amplification at the moment as I try and rekindle my axe wielding ways! Just now I have the following:

Peavey Windsor Studio

Mesa Boogie Caliber 50 (standard version not the plus)

An old solid state Marshall 100w head and a very knackered 4x12 cabinet!

The thing is... with a young (8 month old) son and a terraced house these amps are not really working for me! Too loud, that is the problem. So... what to do!

I have no idea what any of them are worth, which is probably a good place to start - the Peavey is mint (and may get kept... can't decide at the moment), the Boogie sounds divine, naturally, but needs cranked to get the best of it - and whilst it is battered as hell it is seriously LOUD! It is probably also worth a few quid.

The Marshall is just loud and unsubtle, that may go too.

Question is - what are they worth, and am I deluding myself thinking that a lunchbox style head and 1x12 cabinet is going to be the panacea to my dilemma??? I am liking the look of the Hughes and Kettner Tubemeister at the moment, though the Tiny Terror, Dual Terror, Night Train and, increasingly, Blackstar 1w and 5w heads are all starting to clamour for my attention.

I tend to play Les Paul style Guitars, and tend towards the blues and rock end of the spectrum these days (my forrays into the world of Metal are, I think, mostly in the past!)

I'm guessing a small modelling amp like the Fender Mustang 1 or 2 would be out of the question? I get the impression you are a died in the wool valve amp man (not that there is anything wrong with that of course!).

Welcome to the forum BTW.

I'd definitely recommend a Mustang if you need something quiet. Even 1W can be REALLY loud from a valve amp.

Hmmm - yeah, that could be a reasonable option, and a lot cheaper too! At the moment I am using a Line 6 Pod X3 with headphones so am coming around the the modelling side of things.

Though there is just *something* about valves....

I totally agree about valves. But for those moments where you need to use headphones or be *really* quiet, the little Mustang is a genuine revelation. I've had mine a year now and it'll take something REALLY good for me to replace it

I was thinking of getting one of the Vox modelling amps recently or a Line 6 15 watt again with all the effects and everything built in,how does the Mustang compare to those two units?

MILES better imo. I must sound like a stuck record but if you're looking for clean & crunch tones (upto ACDC and Zep for gain levels) then the Mustang blows the competition away.

Add the PC editing and recording and it's a brilliant package at the price.

(I could sell them for a living :D)

I think it has to be worth a wee look when I get the chance - perhaps the Mustang 2... I just like the tone of a 12" speaker!

Solid State could be a good option though all around since you don't need to crank it to get the tone in the same way that a valve needs pushed to really sing.

Hmmmmm

And I would be left with change if I sold the Boogie... which could perhaps be invested in a further guitar ;-)

Those two comments seem rather contradictory. Don't rush a wrong decision.

I had a line 6 30, not that impressed with it, now gone, and got a marshall in place.
This sounds right to me, may-be having that sound with growing up from my teens.

The line6, in the time i had it, played with it a few time's, just could not get along with it.
It spent most of its time in the corner not saying nothing.

The fender, not sure, lots of people like them, it has to suit your ears in the end.
