Hi.
I've got a great sounding Crafter lite and been thinking about using it with the band.
What's a good option for a pickup?
I can fit it, but a) don't really want to cut too many holes and b) have little use for a graphic.
I understand you need a preamp with piezo...is that gospel?
My first delve into tricking out acoustic, so all ideas welcome.
Cheap, simple fit and open sound are what I'm after.
Cheers.

What no-one has advice?
Is this an anti-amplified purist acoustic sect I've stumbled onto in the dusty corner of our beloved forum?
\:\)
But seriously, what are my options?
Anyone? \:\(

Ah- just seen this!

I've been having the same conversation with myself. I need a pickup for my Taylor 214 for the new band.

I had an Aria with an undersaddle piezo and Fishman classic 4 in the past and it was adequate, but nothing special. Definitely not ideal as it was pretty tinny sounding. And extreme as a retro-fit as onboard preamps are a pretty hefty alteration to make. So I started looking at alternatives and that means soundhole pickups or microphone systems.

Soundhole pickups look a bit more clumsy but are generally easier to fit & control and are a lot easier to switch to other Guitars if required.

After a lot of reading I've gone for an LR Baggs M1 Active. I've seen countless pros using them live, and never heard a bad sound. Went for the active version as I really don't want to be messing about with extra preamps for a couple of songs per night.

It's not the cheapest, but being a soundhole pickup it's totally reversable apart from the combi strap-button/jack, which is a small price to pay. And being a decent unit I'll be able to sell it for very little loss if I really hate it.

The other major option I considered was the Fishman Rare Earth- it's a bit cheaper and slightly less good, but still really good. Most pickup makers do soundhole pickups these days, but it does seem you get what you pay for, and a passive pickup, tho cheaper, will generally require an outboard preamp to get the best from it.

Sounds like you're in the same line of thinking as me.
I will check out the Baggs active (I would rather not have to fiddle with extra preamps...although I could just use my pignose?).
I've only heard of the Fishman pups really and then the piezo under bridge. The piezo seemed really cheap and quite easy to fit, but I've no idea how they sound...so thanks for the heads up.
Cheers. Mike.

Mine's on its way from Thomann. I'm hoping it'll be here by Wednesday so I can fit it and use it at my rehearsal on Thursday. I'll let you know how I get on!

Guys! Just found this. I have a piezo equipped acoustic and I used to have a passive sound hole pickup. Quite a difference in sound. The piezo will sound far more like an acoustic with a good mic up close, whereas a passive coil pickup will be sort of half way to the typical sound of a semi. I like both results but I'm not exactly a purist.

Just registered (note to self - go do an Introduce Yourself in a minute!) to say:

K&K Pure Mini.
Minimum fuss, great sound (even passively). Highly recommended.
